Why are the Twin Towers not being rebuilt?

Asked by lloydbird (8740points) July 30th, 2009

Why are they not being reconstructed, in a way that will better stand an impact, such as the ones that brought them down? If another iconic buildind had been destroyed in such a way, such as the Empire State Building, would it not be reconstructed, just as it was?
Isn’t the skyline of New York permanently scarred without them?
They are only buildings, why not rebuild?
Isn’t anything else a victory for those that brought them down?

Because people ar too scared that it will be targeted again. No one would rent in it. or should I say not enough.
Also, the cost to build it is way too much for today’s economy to handle.

Sort of like the Panama Canal. You will never see such a construction project again.
The safety issues and liability alone would create too much cost over run.

Because if we rebuild them, that confirms that they were knocked down in the first place!
We’re to believe that they’re just cloaked for now.

Why would you want to rebuild them? A couple of new buildings should suffice, without forcing folks to relive that day.

@Zendo They were beautiful.

This New Yorker is pissed that they arent being reconstructed, to the identical dimentions, with very subtle asthetic updates, and modern safety and engineering.

All the plans for the original twin towers are safely stored a few blocks from ground zero.

I firmly believe the only appropriate statement to the loved ones of the victims as well as the terrorists as to rebuild the exact same silhouette back on the exact same space.

Sadly, the terrorists are winning the war in the form of convincing the weak that the American way of life is one of excess and the twin towers would signify that extravagance if built again.

Thanks for ruining it for the rest of us.

Aren’t they building some kind of memorial there instead?

I want to know why New Orleans hasn’t been rebuilt.

Sarcasm's avatar

If you do that, you let the underwater terrorists win.
DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND ANYTHING?

It may be too painful to resurrect them. More importantly is to never forget them and how so many innocents lost their lives that can never be rebuilt.

The original design is unique among buildings anywhere near that large, and uniquely vulnerable to just the sort of thing that brought them down. (damage to the exterior load bearing wall/curtain AND fire damage and crash damage to the trusses between the exterior walls and the core.)
