The world is on a turtle's back - book series?

Asked by rowenaz (2441points) July 30th, 2009

Does anyone know the name of this book series, from Britain, in which the world exists on the back of a turtle gliding through space? I read it when I was in England something like 15 years ago…

Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series, YAY!! Read as many as you can!

Yep, Discworld is a very good series. I highly recommend it.

It’s turtles, all the way down.

Terry Pratchett is great and throw this answer into the “Discworld” series. The movies are sort of ok.

@mrentropy How many movies are there precisely? I know of Hogfather (which I thought was amazing) and Color of Magic (which i thought was extremely meh, despite having Tim Curry). Are there more?

@BhacSsylan there were also some animated film but I cant remember from which books (Mort possibly)

If you like the Discworld then may I recommend Good Omens which is a comedy based the movie Omen

@BhacSsylan @Lightlyseared There are two animated “movies,” and they were “Wyrd Sisters” and “Soul Music.”

I liked “Hogfather,” although I wasn’t keen on Teatime’s voice. I kind of liked the other one, but I didn’t care for some of the changes that were made. I loved David Jason as Albert, but I always some Rincewind as being more Rowan Atkinson-ish. Or Eric Idle-like.

That’s just me, though.

Apparently Going Postal is going to be made into a film by the same team as Hogfather and The Colour of Magic in time for Easter 2010

I love the discworld series, Mort is my personal favourite, it explains death and Ankh Morpork so well!

Thank you!

Sorry the idea isn’t original to Mr Pratchett. The turtle carrying mankind on his back is an ancient Eastern myth meant to explain some large flood disaster similar to the Judeo/Christian/Muslim myth of Noah;s Ark.

Whoops Do some of you still believe the dinosaurs died out because they missed the boat?

mrentropy's avatar

I don’t think the original idea was in question, just what series of books from Britain took place on a flat world carried by a turtle. The “Discworld” books are the only ones I know of.

I personally think the dinosaurs died out from eating a lot of take out fast food, but I spend much of my time in Pellucidar.

galileogirl's avatar

I’m willing to believe that. In the documentary, Jurrassic Park, most of the dinosaurs were pretty plump.

I’m sure the movie set was catered; that probably didn’t help much with a bulging T. Rex waistline.

You know what it is… it’s that damn craft services table. The production manager hired the place that fills the table with chips, candy and junk; not the fruits, vegetables and the occasional small mammal that keeps a velociraptor healthy!

you guys are all hilarious! unfortunately, our library has very few books due to a fire started by a mental patient (can’t really make this stuff up!) so I will have to hunt around!

Lightlyseared's avatar

@galileogirl Thank you for pointing out that the turtle thing was not orignal to Mr Pratchett but I am afraid that most people who have read the books would be well aware. The discworld books are filled with references to history, weird beliefs, current events, famous people etc and then viewed at a slant. That’s what makes them funny.

And the occasional quantum physics joke.

Lightlyseared's avatar

…that probably involves dead cats

galileogirl's avatar

Ah. Well I’m an historian not a scientist and our dead cat jokes have an entirely different context.
