Should sand between newly installed concrete pavers reach top of pavers?

Asked by pallen123 (1519points) July 30th, 2009

We just had a large paver patio installed, and in some places, the sand they spread between pavers comes to the top of the pavers, and in other places, it’s just half way up the side of the pavers. Should it go to the top?

When we had ours pavers put in, the sand layer ended coming up until about one fingers width from the top. It’s the same between all of them so we didn’t add any more sand.

It should be slightly lower than the top of the pavers.

My contractor husband said “yes, it needs more sand.” he said you should get it wet, let it dry and add more sand. Repeat until the sand stays to the top of the pavers.

@Judi You beat me to it. We just had ours done, and that’s exactly what the contractor did.
