What is the origin of the the term charley horse?

I assume it has something to do with a guy named Charlie who got kicked by a horse at some point. Although there is a particular remembrance of pain I associate with that phrase.

It appears no one really knows.. It seems to have been traced back into the 1880’s, used by baseball players, possibly referring to a particular player named ‘Charley’. A horse that was ‘retired’ was also called a ‘Charley’.

The latter seems the most probable origin, IMHO

I liked the link – I’d heard dead leg and corker when I lived overseas, and had no clue that the guy was talking about his leg…thought is was SOMEWHERE else…..well!
