Abortion pill?

Wouldn’t it be better to end it as quickly as you can? It isn’t like you can take the pill three months in. It is called “The Morning After” pill for a reason. Take the pill if you can.

Ah, that’s what you’re referring to.

Up to 9 weeks the abortion pill is reliable, and the planned parenthood I was in contact with actually presented this as a first option, and the in clinic as a second. If the pill didn’t work, the surgical abortion would be covered under the same cost. ($425 here, plus an extra $60 for a shot you need if you have a negative blood type.)

The pill is not the fastest solution obviously, but besides about 4 hours of heavy cramps the night of taking it, it doesn’t seem like it’s much worse than a rougher period. You may throw up a little bit, but at least your not dialated with rods.

This is all speaking from an observer’s point of view, since I’m a guy, but we chose pill and honestly that seemed to be the best route in our case.

At planned parenthood they were exceedingly supportive and we’ll have to return for the follow-up visit next week. Hope that info helps!

Edit: she mentioned I should explain the procedure. If you take the pill, you’ll be given on pill with water at the time of the appointment that inhibits progesterin which starts the abortion. Then, the next day you would take 4 pills after dinner that you keep on the sides of your cheeks in your mouth for 30 minutes, and swallow what’s left. Then in our case she was prescribed vicadin to curb some of pain which was like $10 without health insurance. About 2 hours after taking those pills there’s some tough cramping and blood. They said it was “medically advised” to your back rubbed so I did that for her and it seemed to help a little. Then right about 4 hours after out came a small black sac (sorry if that’s too descriptive) and the pain began to subside in the next hour. The entire week she was also instructed to take an antibiotic after breakfast and dinner to prevent any kind of infection.

The morning after pill is only a viable solution for a very short period. Surgery is required after a point.

I think this question is better suited for a medical professional to answer to ensure your health and safety.

I should imagine that the Morning After Pill would be preferable whenever it is possible, in that abortion involves a D&C, which means sharp objects are used to scrape the inner surface of the womb. Hence, there is a slight but existing risk of perforation.

However, I had always assumed it was called the Morning After Pill because it could only be used within a very short time.

You probably need to discuss this further with Planned Parenthood or your own gynecologist.

I am NOT talking about the morning after pill but about the abortion pill and I would like to share experiences. How does it feel?

Darwin's avatar

Never heard of an “abortion pill.” According to this site it is RU486, which is the exact same thing as the Morning After Pill, at least back when I was an age to know about such things.

cak's avatar

@Darwin – it was called RU486 during it’s development stages and the early stages…remember all the debate about it? Then, I believe a lot of people started referring to it as the morning after pill, and on Planned Parenthood’s website, it is referred to the abortion pill.

@Federica@nyukin is talking about the abortion pill.

The morning after pill is not the same thing as the “abortion pill”, for lack of a better term. The morning after pill as it is usually administered contains a high dose of estrogens and progestins and is basically an overdose of the normal birth control pill. It prevents implantation of a fertilized egg.

The “abortion pill” (mifepristone) can be administered as a morning after pill but this is almost never done. It is usually used to cause a chemical abortion of fetuses up to 49 days in utero.

Morning after pill

Here are some personal accounts of experiences with different kinds of abortions.

Good luck. I hope everything turns out as well as it can.

@nyukin Thanks for the detailed description of the events with much detail and little emotion. That’s hard to pull off, but its such a gain for society. Emotions are easy, let me have the facts!

iwamoto's avatar

i can’t imagine it feeling very nice if that’s what you want to hear, i mean, that fetus has to come out, right ?

jrpowell's avatar

Holy shit Niki. I didn’t know such a thing existed. I should shut up and go back to answering questions that allow me to talk shit about Windows.

Edit:: It don’t want to google this since I will get pictures. What is a approximate size of a 49 day old fetus? A lemon? I don’t know.

I would most definitely suggest the surgical abortion. The pill sounds easier but it’ll put you through more trouble than you think. The pill actually forces your body into labor which causes you to have a miscarriage. So you will be experiencing the worst cramps you’ve probably ever felt. Also, the fetus comes out for days after you take the pill. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t be able to handle that very well emotionally. Another downside to the pill is that you usually bleed for weeks and weeks afterward. I would spend the extra couple hundred and go for surgical. That way it’s done and over with.

nikipedia's avatar

@johnpowell: About ¼ to ⅓ of an inch long. It is probably not lemon-sized until well into the second trimester.

Likeradar's avatar

@ItalianPrincess1217 I agree. With a D&C (dilatation & curettage) you are under the supervision of medical professionals the whole time. The physical part is over fairly quickly and you don’t have to actually see what is happening.

casheroo's avatar

I didn’t know people have never heard of the “abortion pill”

You can take the abortion pill very early in pregnancy, it is like experiencing a miscarriage. I have experienced both, you just bleed more when you take the pill. I found it a better option for me, because of the risks that can go along with a surgical abortion were not risks I was willing to take.

okk my nurses lady told me that i was doing the aspirational abortion, is that the same thing as the scraping and dialation??? I’m terrified now please i need to know ASAP, my appointment is tomorrow.
