I washed a white shirt with the colored clothes and now it's pink. How do I fix it?

Asked by FrogOnFire (719points) July 31st, 2009

I wasn’t thinking while doing laundry the other day and didn’t do a good job sorting out the colors. A brand-new white shirt got thrown in with the colored clothes and it was pink when I took it out of the washer…and NOT a manly shade of pink that, as a guy, I could acceptably wear. Can I fix this? If so, how?

Buy a new shirt…

ABoyNamedBoobs03's avatar

do it to the rest of your clothes so the original pink shirt won’t feel segregated…

You have to redefine what society considers manly, that way your pink shirt will be totally acceptable. That would be easier than trying to fix the shirt itself.

You tell people you did it on purpose!

Accsessorize it :P

You could bleach it?

FrogOnFire's avatar

@gggritso lol Sounds like my best bet so far.

Since it’s already ruined try bleaching it. I’ve done it before and it works. Good luck.

Seems like a great start to another tye dye wonder

Maharet's avatar

it won’t work. i’m very pessimistic in case you haven’t noticed. :)

Pink on a man shows that he has no insecurities. You can wear your heart on your sleeve.

Zendo's avatar

Wear it. Roll it up over your tummy and tie it just under your chest.

dynamicduo's avatar

You don’t. Be comfortable in wearing a pink shirt or buy new ones. And learn the lesson that whites and colors should be washed separately :)

dynamicduo's avatar

Oh, you could also dye it darker if you want…

Maharet's avatar

oh yeah! go buy red dye at your local pharmacy or grocery store. any color dye that’s darker than the pink. there…now i don’t feel guilty anymore. :P

Wash it with white clothes?

YARNLADY's avatar

Use either a chlorine bleach, or a non-bleach whitener. Fill the washer with water and whitening product, then add shirt. Run through full cycle – then run again with clear water.

this might help
:)

fix your perspective, not the shirt! haha. or you could try any of those suggestions up there. you could probably get cheap fabric dye at michael’s art store, or even target, i’m guessing.

An ex I lived with did this so I wouldn’t ask him to do the laundry anymore. Which is really a jerky thing to do. Don’t do that.

Anyway, here’s a young man in a pink shirt. He’s still rather manly. The trick is that you wear the shirt. Don’t let it wear you.

Okay, well I have pink shirts that I wear (like the one cyndihugs posted), but this is not the same shade of pink…it’s like a really ugly pinkish-purple. I wish I could post a picture but my Canon Digital Camera is fried (and that’s a whole ‘nother question thread).

cyn's avatar

@FrogOnFire another pink-purple shirt doesn’t make a man turn to the other side…

This is one of those deep cosmic mysteries. The color came out of the original garment easily enough. Now why doesn’t it come out of the shirt?

Well, the old pink-shirts-and-underwear experience seems to be one that every guy has to have just once. You can wear the pink shirt, but if you need a white one, buy a new shirt.

“Rit” has a product sold in most laundry aisles and fabric stores, that may help remove color stains from WHITE clothing (it removes all color, so shouldn’t be used on colored clothing). Rit Color Remover is very powerful, so be sure to wear rubber gloves and old clothes, and follow all directions on the box. It may even mar the finish on some appliances and table tops, so exercise caution in where you use it.

If you can’t find it locally, you can buy it online.

1. Soak it in bleach water, wash, repeat if necessary.
2. Tie dye it with other colors.
3. Get some good dye and make it a different color. I like chocolate brown. You should do that.

There’s a product called Synthrapol that might lift the dye. One place that sells it is Dharma Trading Company, it is used by by professional tie dyers to keep the excess dye particles suspended in the water when washing after dying so it doesn’t turn muddy looking. I’ve used it a couple times with good results in situations like yours.

Another option – Shout makes a product called Color Catcher Sheets – they’re more to prevent dye transfer than treat it after the fact, but I have friends who have had success using it on vintag clothing with color bleeding.

you could bleech it or something like that but im not sure how effective it will be. you could just buy a new white shirt.
