Do you go through "phases" with the music you listen to?
What I mean by this is do you change what you listen to often, sort of obsessing over one band/group/artist this week, but someone else the next? If so, what is your current obsession? If not, what’s keeping you from diversifying?
Me, I’m constantly changing what I listen to. I try to check out anything. When I joined Fluther, I was in love with Anaal Nathrakh (hard to classify, they’re kind of a mix of death and black metal), but this week all I’ve listened to is Rage Against The Machine.

Sure.
Week before last: Britpop. (Blur, Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, Boy Kill Boy)
Last week: Classic Rock (The Who, Beatles, Queen, Dire Straits)
This Week: Alt-Folk (Bright Eyes, Andrew Bird, M. Ward, Neutral Milk Hotel)
Next Week: Likely rockish stuff (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Muse, Audioslave, Rage Against The Machine)
I’ve been on a bit of a Pavement binge lately, too.
Yep, I’ve been listening to the new album of the band Sick Puppies the second consecutive week now.
Also had this “obsession” with Korn, Linkin Park and so many other bands…
Definitely. The first half of this year was all indie rock, then I went though a month or so of electronica and now I’m back to indie: “Aberdeen City” and “We Were Promised Jetpacks”.
@dverhey, I definitely have mad love for RHCP.
Yes. Current obsession would be some old Cradle of Filth and Sigh,
Oh yes, what I’m interested in changes a lot. However, “phases” often means that you’re interested in something and then it goes away to the point where you really aren’t interested in it anymore. It’s not that I’m not interested in it, I just keep adding more and more music and sometimes I go through phases of liking something a lot and then I move to something else. I still like everything that I’ve liked in the past; I can’t think of any music that I’ve “thrown away”.
(ditto to @DominicX)
to some extent.
i rarely stop loving music i have loved, but i go through a few weeks/months where i’ll become specifically in love with a certain band or type of music. right now, i’m obsessed with the song frankie’s gun by the felice brothers. as soon as it ends, i rewind it to the beginning. oh god, favourite song.
i just went through a serious musical love affair with first aid kit, but though that truly creepily obsessive period of my life is over (for now), i’m pretty in love with them still.
laughing owls, atmosphere, aesop rock, and sublime are a few other recent kicks i’ve been on.
@DominicX, I’m with you on that. I’m always adding to my library, but I don’t really stop listening to anything. I still dust off Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park on occasion.
@tiffanyandthewall atmosphere, aesop, and sublime = <3
Not really, been listening to more or less the same music since I was 14.
I could listen to Indie, pop, electronica, rock, rok-n-roll, disco, alternative, new wave….etc. etc.
but never Hip-pop!
big time.
I always listen to U2
Every Fall I add classical
Christmas at the holidays
Always looking for alternative
then I just hit mix on my iTunes, country, punk, rock, metal, 80’s, 90’s, 70’s, 50’s, 40’s, 60’s, hip-pop, rap, new wave.
okay I was lying about the never hip-pop
The only thing I can’t listen to is Regaetton…
that shitt gets on my nerves for real!
GA @Bri_L
This week it’s been “Drop Dead, Gorgeous” and other heavy stuff.
Last week it was stupid lovey dovey shit and whatnot.
@Tink1113, do you like their new album? I know a lot of people who can’t stand it because its so much different from their old stuff, but I love everything they put out.
I’m on a Grizzly Bear/ Fleet Foxes/Department of Eagles kick. I go round on various musical kicks and back again.
I can. not. WAIT! for the free GB show in on 30 August. It’s going to be awesome!
I’m with Jack. I’ve listened to the same type of music for years & years. Whatever artist is included in that genre, I’ll listen to. Altho there are some songs that when they come on, the radio gets shut off.
No I just love music! Of all kinds!
Not really. Music for me is a tool for moods as well as an enjoyment. I have playlists in my head for people in my life, sometimes we share back and forth.
@CodexNecro Yes I know their new album, I actually like it. Their old stuff was good too but I also like the new.
One week Beatles, the next week Coltrane and Miles Davis, the next week disco something danceable.
Yes, because the music can change your mood.
@pizzaman – Welcome to fluther! and good answer
