I am new to Fluther?

Asked by Flo_Nightengale (1491points) August 1st, 2009

How do I get involved in ongoing groups that are of interest to me. Just for now I have been answering questions.

Welcome!
Hmm “groups”? I don’t believe we have groups in Fluther

Welcome to Fluther!

What you are doing, answering questions and asking them, is what Fluther is.

Aside of “My Fluther” which allows you to follow the questions of people you are interested in there are no formal “groups”

There is a chat room that sometimes members meet in and hang. It is hit and miss- you have to check back or wait for someone else to come in.

Hi, @Flo_Nightengale, and welcome. One thing you might want to do is make sure your profile lists topics of interest to you. When they match tags on people’s questions, those questions will appear in your “Questions for You” section, and so it will begin to reflect your interests.

This list will also be built up by the tags on questions you answer and reduced when you click “Not Interested.” (When you click “Remove,” the question drops from your list without affecting your record of interests.)

So even if we don’t have groups as such, because this is not actually a discussion site, you will be shown links for threads that jibe with your interests, and you will find discussions there.

Also, if you click a topic in a tag, you will see links to other questions with the same tag.

Hi @Flo_Nightengale. Welcome aboard!
There aren’t really any specific groups but the interface recognizes the topics you engage in most and sends “Questions for You” based on that info. You’ll find each person has their areas of interest.
Basically just keep doing what you’re doing and you’ll get a good feel for the site very quickly.

Increase the amount of topics in your profile, and don’t be afraid to browse the questions you weren’t asked.
Welcome to Fluther.

This is my third day here, and I decided to just jump in by answering questions until I have a great question to ask myself. I already recognize a lot of flutherites and see tiny patterns forming in their answers. One day when I finally get the courage to pick an avatar, maybe the same will happen to me :) As for know welcome :)

Welcome! We’re waiting for your first question.

@mattbrowne, you answered my first question. :-)

@Flo_Nightengale – ‘I am new to Fluther’ was a question? Aha. Sounded like a statement to me, or maybe a greeting ‘Hello here I am, ready to rock and roll’. Now let’s rock and roll. Come up with a great question. Nobody’s gonna bite you. Since one of your hobbies is sex, many Flutherites will jump at questions related to that hobby. And Flutherites love problem solving! Try it. Of course it’s okay to just answer other people’s questions. Some Flutherites use Fluther this way.

@mattbrowne The question was “I am new to Fluther?”
The answer is, of course: “Yes, you are.”

@filmfann – Sometimes things can be so simple ;-)

Not to steal the spotlight, but any tips for etiquette for thanking people who took time to answer.

Jeruba's avatar

Yes, @bumwithablackberry. We thank people (a) by clicking “Great Answer” for answers we think are outstanding for some reason (by our own criteria, whatever they are) and (b) by saying “thank you.”
