How do I get my TV tuner to work in Windows Vista 64-bit?

Asked by FrogOnFire (719points) August 1st, 2009

A couple years ago, I bought an ATI TV Wonder USB 2.0 TV Tuner and connected it to my Windows XP computer. I recently purchased a new laptop that runs Windows Vista 64-bit and I can’t get the TV tuner to work with it. ATI didn’t release any drivers for Vista, but several online tutorials show how to trick Vista into using the XP drivers. Those XP drivers, however, are 32-bit and won’t work in 64-bit Vista. Am I out of luck on this $100, hardly-used device?

You could do a web search in the hopes that someone has written and shared a Vista x64 driver on their own. There’s likely a a forum somewhere that someone has asked that. Chances may be slim. Good luck!

Trying to look for 64 bit XP drivers is the only other potentially viable option.

@The_Compassionate_Heretic Thanks. Yeah there are even no 64-bit XP drivers. Looks the device is now a brick/doorstop/paperweight.

You can try installing one of the virtual machine programs and install a 32-bit OS on to it. I’m not sure how well that’ll work in your case, but it might be worth a try.

@mrentropy Smart thinking, but I want it to work with Vista Media Center, so I don’t think that will work.

I could install it on my 32-bit WinXP file/media/web/ftp server in my basement and stream the tv channels across my network. But how would I do that?

That one I’m not too sure of. I haven’t used Media Center so I don’t know if there’s an option for doing that kind of thing. I’m not even sure if TVersity, or its like, do that.
