What in the world is this soul I read about that apparently only human beings have?

Obviously something you’re lacking.

Anyway, I believe that a soul can be found in humans or animals, what gives a living creature emotions such as love, guilt, happiness, etc, which any number of humans/animals may possess.

There’s the soul, the mind and the heart. I would say it leaves you when you die!
It’s who you are, your personality.

A Soul is a relic of the philosophy of Dualism. Des Cartes (Famous for “Cogito ergo sum”) actually located the soul in the pineal gland.

There is still a very large population of hopeful humans who wish to believe that there is “something” that is separate from the mind and continues after death, but I have seen and heard nothing empirical that convinces me of this.

Speaking of duality ,here is what William Butler Yeats said in his

Dialog of Self and Soul.

The sixth stanza:

“My Self. A living man is blind and drinks his drop.
What matter if the ditches are impure?
What matter if I live it all once more?
Endure that toil of growing up;
The ignominy of boyhood; the distress
Of boyhood changing into man;
The unfinished man and his pain
Brought face to face with his own clumsiness;”

The last stanza:

I am content to follow to its source
Every event in action or in thought;
Measure the lot; forgive myself the lot!
When such as I cast out remorse
So great a sweetness flows into the breast
We must laugh and we must sing,
We are blest by everything
Everything we look upon is blest

Your soul is you, it’s what and who you are.

@mangeons – Wow, dude. Tell us how you feel, hm? Don’t sugarcoat it or anything.

mangeons's avatar

@dUc0N 1) I’m a girl 2) What are you talking about?

tullbejm's avatar

Every person has a soul. It is that part of the human which is accountable to God after his/her death. It is that part of us which has a personal relationship with God. Without our soul we are not bodily alive.

@tullbejm , Thank you, you make my point.

@dUc0N Nice catch dude. I saw what he said, but am not bothering with a reply.

The topic was supposed to read, “more soul than I can control.” It’s a George C. Sott quote from the movie “The New Centurions.”

I’m. not. a. he.

Its an attempt to explain psychological continuity in a body whose parts are constantly being replaced.

@mangeons:
1) Meh. Didn’t bother to look at your profile before posting… that one’s my bad.
2) I’m fairly sure that to claim someone is “obviously lacking a soul” is considered to be pretty rude to most people. Please go flame somewhere else.

I think a soul is the life force. Although not exclusive to humans.

The soul is what keeps the molecules together

mangeons's avatar

Sorry. Not necessarily flaming…but anyway, it won’t happen again.

The soul is a metaphysical body separate from (but interacting with) the mind and brain, and is religious in nature. If you don’t believe in any religion, you have little business believing in a soul, as it is probably going to vary in different religions (e.g. the “soul” of hinduism would probably be something close to the real metaphysical reality (the Brahman) of you that is the only real part of you, whereas other religions that account for the reality of physical things will give the soul a smaller role).
