Is my dog sick?

Asked by madmax303 (262points) August 2nd, 2009

My dog has been acting kind of strange. He has been acting like he is depressed or tired all the time. We play with him a lot and he is fine when we play. We give him LOTS of attention so i dont think he is depressed. His eyes look a little wattery, too. When he went on a car ride today, he stuck his head out the window but his nose was still very wet.

Never let your dog stick his head out the window, he could lose an eye.

Whenever you notice unusual behavior like that, give it a couple of days, and then take him to the vet for a check-up. They can get sick, just like we do.

take his temp rectally, should be around 102.5. How old is he? Are all bodily functions normal, how do his gums look, a normal pinkish color?

Not much different than humans except they can’t tell you so you have to be extra vigilant!

@rooeytoo FYI a normal temperature for a dog ranges from 99.5 – 102.5

There is not enough information in your post to diagnose what is wrong with your dog madmax, but there is enough information there to show that you are concerned and should take him in to a vet to have him checked out. There are way too many questions that need answering.

@Lovey_Howell – thank you for correcting me. Especially the FYI part!

I meant to put in the range but must have thought faster than I typed. The rest of my response were a few relevant things that most vets would check themselves initially. Since I live 250k from the nearest vet, I try to be aware of whether it may just be a bad day or something serious.

is a good resource as well. I am a fan of common sense medicine for myself and my dogs.

If you are concerned, have him checked out by his veterinarian. The symptoms that you describe are too non-specific to guess at a cause.

his body functions are normal and he is 4 years old.

If he looks depressed he might have gnawed on an electric chord. That’s what happened to my dog and he has been afraid of gnawing ever since :(
