Whale Wars FIrst of all, these guys are crazy and are boarderline eco-terrorists, however I think whaling should be stopped and these seem to be the only ppl doing something about it.
They have one vessel: the Steve Irwin, two fast moving zodiac type boats, and one helicopter. They use the fast boats to attack Japanese harpoon ships with butyric acid bombs, (stink bombs) that will ruin any whale meat aboard. The Japanese ships use water cannons to keep these boats away. In case the fast boats get past the water cannons they also rig up netting to deflect the bombs. In addition to these defensive methods the Japanese also have LRAD devices, which are usually used for riot-control and can permanently damage hearing. When the bombs don’t work they usually resort to dragging a tether line in front of the harpoon ships to hopefully tie up the rutter and disable the ship, but has yet to work. Then they got pretty extreme by sending some guys on board and trying to force a hostage situation and gain media attention (i said they were crazy). If you support them how could they change their tactics for the better? or If you oppose them, how could the Japanese whalers keep them off their backs?

I’m against the ones hunting the whales.
Are they illegal whalers?
If so they deserve it
I am against illegal whaling, but that show makes me sick. I think the Steve Irwin crew are just as in the wrong as the whalers. I don’t know how to keep the whalers in check, which is probably why I’m not in politics, but I really don’t think that “Greenpeace”-like action is the way to do it.
@teh_kvlt_liberal – Yes, the International Whaling Commission outlawed whaling in the Southern Ocean.
They have to do it since no government will step in and take charge before two ships ram each other killing both crews. I guess it may take that before we (USA) put a Navy ship in the middle of the popular whaling waters. No violence needed, just the sight of a Navy ship will stop the whalers.
They are very brave, and to the whales… they are heroes
The Japanese claim they are using the whales for some sort of scientific research, therefore it is not illegal. Even though no one believes that story.
Terrorists are just that regardless of what the cause. If those guys were attacking an American ship all sorts of hell would be raised.
Not all whales are endangered so I wonder why people are so irrate about whaling. It is the same as eating tuna that has not harmed dolphins, why is it okay to eat tuna and not the dolphins?
I’ll ignore the long description and answer the main question, so I can try to skirt the PETA vs. Industry arguments.
I’m completely for the show. Because I think it’s completely hilarious, and therefore fun to watch.
@Les – You’re on to something there. Greenpeace kicked those guys out for being “too extreme” or whatever.
If they don’t do it, nobody else will. These illegal whalers must be stopped. They are killing beautiful, ancient, creatures who have done no wrong. I absolutely support the show and if I could I would join them in this quest. The Japanese whalers deserve everything they have coming to them.
@rooeytoo Eating whale is an exquisite and luxurious way to show that you have money in Japan. I highly doubt they are whaling for research. This is just an excuse to try to get away with it.
@rooeytoo ..“Not all whales are endangered so I wonder why people are so irrate about whaling. It is the same as eating tuna that has not harmed dolphins, why is it okay to eat tuna and not the dolphins?”
It is because whales and dolphins are mammals…and they are intelligent mammals…possibly more intelligent than humans. Many people are against eating criiters who are smarter than us and who may be relatives of ours.
I think it’s great what they are doing, but they are not the people to do it. They don’t know how to run a ship, and by doing things like jumping on a japanese whaling ship and getting taken away, not only do they make fools out of themselves, but they make the cause seem like a joke. My opinion? Run the ship like the military. One person in charge. And that person should be someone who knows what they are doing.
