What should we name our baby?

Asked by Russter (242points) August 3rd, 2009

My wife is due to have a baby boy this month. What are you ideas for good baby names for a baby boy? We like names that are a little more unique but not weird (example: we like Jonas and Finn)?

Moon Zappa…Oh no, wait a sec…that one is already taken. How about Huckleberry (goes well with Finn). And Huck is a great nickname.

Or Steve!

Darwin's avatar

Why not Jonas Finn? Or do you already have offspring by those names? Whatever you choose, make sure it is easy to spell, and pronounced exactly the way it is spelled.

Here is a compilation of unique baby names for you to look through.

I like Anglo-Celtic names: Ian (or Euan), Kieran, Reece (or Rhys, if you’re Welsh), Graeme, Aidan, Fraser, Morgan

Go back in time and find some names from the 1920’s or so. Like Elmer, Jesse, Lester, Hugh, Clyde, Floyd, Woodrow or Cecil.

My nephews name is Phalen. I like names like Chase or Chance!

‘5’ if you’re a Charlie Brown fan.

The Social Security Administration’s list of baby names is my favorite resource for American-based names of any period since 1879. You can seek out the popular ones or avoid them using various sort criteria.

If you favor names of some particular national or language origin, you can Google them by ethnicity and sex.

Names are so personal… You’ll never please everyone. It’s important to think about what the initials of the first, middle and last names spell. Also, think about creative possibilities for harassment from grade school classmates that are name based. For example, I have a nephew, now grown, named Jedidiah. If his parents had realized he would be tormented as “Jedi-diarrhea”, they might have chosen a different name.

Other names to avoid:
Lucifer
Adolph

@ragingloli I see there’s another Akira fan in the house…

My grand kids are Jude, Liam and Rees. I think they’re all great. My son is Landon, but it was not a common name at all when he was born. I tell him that he was such a cute little kid that all the parents started naming their kids that. (he’s 25 now.)

It is kind of hard to answer without knowing your last name. Some names just don’t sound good together. Still, my suggestion would be Cavan or Mason.

rebbel's avatar

Cartman?

Judi's avatar

@Supacase ; Cavan will get teased and called “cave man.”

Supacase's avatar

@Judi Maybe. I know a boy named Cavan and no one has been clever enough to come up with that one yet. lol It is a short “a” so that may help throw the bullies for a loop.

kalafatic's avatar

Wife and I are are in a similar situation. We find out next week if it’s a boy or girl.
Our curent list of boy names include:
Charlie
Oscar
Henry
Isra
Marley
Oliver
Xavier
Daniel
Keats
Finley
and Jack

Best of luck with the decision!

I like Jonas too – might add that to the list!

AstroChuck's avatar

I vote for Charlie.

eponymoushipster's avatar

Just refer to it as “you”. that way, s/he can develop his/her own personality.

kalafatic's avatar

My wife just reminded me why Jonas might not be that great after all.

AstroChuck's avatar

@kalafatic – I have a grandson named Jonas. And, no. He was not named for any of them.

kalafatic's avatar

@AstroChuck No disrespect to your grandson, but the name carries a little baggage for me these days. And as my dad is also named Chuck, I think that Charlie is a better choice:)

AstroChuck's avatar

Charlie is my dad’s name as well.

filmfann's avatar

A friend of my niece named their son Jack Danger. Yes, Danger is his middle name.

Russter's avatar

well part of the reason we like the name Jonas is that it’s a common norwegian name—and he’ll have a lot of norwegian heritage. We really don’t like the relation to the jonas brothers at all… but we’re hoping they’ll phase out quickly. What do you think?

and just FYI on the baby update, my wife should have the baby any day now

kalafatic's avatar

I have a friend that just named their son Viking – there’s a Norwegian name for you. Best wishes on the impending arrival!

punkrockworld's avatar

Why don’t you go for Kurt Hansen, that sounds pretty norwegian to me :)

Judi's avatar

Hey, this question was asked a month ago. What did the name end up being?
