Music is a true healer for me. I very recently went through a very hard break up and Ben Harper’s 2nd cd on Live from Mars just speaks to me and helped me emotionally. Also, Joe Firstman’s The War of Women and Ben’s Both Sides of the Gun was another one that I listen to when I’m feeling down.
Tell me the albums and even particular songs that has been your therapist.

I was never good at listening to music that helped heal me; I always fell victim to music that probably made me even more depressed or made me feel like I was on drugs. Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Modest Mouse, Death Cab… @AstroChuck, I think your avatar just winked at me.
I remember I kept listening to Mr Bungle’s s/t during my second year of high school to keep my mind off of overdue lab reports. Not only I had more lab reports, but that album made me more demented than ever. THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Like ubersiren I listen to songs that make me feel worse.. It’s weird. My favorites to listen to are Elton John “I guess that’s why they call it the blues” awkwardly milli vanilli “girl I’m gonna miss you” and Justin timberlake “what goes around”
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, especially “Everything Is Everything”. And Sgt. Pepper’s.
It’s not the WORDS to a song that helps me. I listen to upbeat rhythms when I’m down. My iPod is loaded with everything from Disco to Jazz.
Hope all is well with you. I was engaged three different times in my life (so far). Each one fell through. It can be a bummer.
Take consolation in the fact that you WILL get over it.
I always listen to “clarity” by jimmy eat world. so calming/soothing.. and provides exactly what it’s title infers.
also, ben folds has been called (by many) the master of break up songs. His music definitely helps too!
@photographcrash : Oooh, yes. I’m one of his biggest fans and I can say that he did help once I made it through the really dark part of the woods.
I will also listen to music that helps me purge my feelings…
if I’m angry, I enjoy metal and grunge rock (especially Alice in Chains and Soundgarden);
If I’m sad/depressed, I enjoy singer/songwriter pieces (definitely a lot of Ben Folds, also Sarah McLachlan);
eventually, I will realize that the mood is passing, and I’ll start to play music that is more upbeat and positive or just tune into a station that plays new music for me to check out.
@aprilsimnel lurve for Lauryn Hill.
Sade- Stronger than Pride
This album really touched my emotional side for some reason.
DMB Under the Table And Dreaming
NIN This Downward Spiral
India Arie – Voyage to India
conor oberst has been my therapist, dream husband, and pity party buddy for going on 5 or 6 years now.
When my heart needs to be mended, music only makes it worse.
My Chemical Romance’s I’m Not Okay (I Promise) and pretty much the entire (first) Panic! At The Disco album (especially Nails for Breakfast, Tacks for Snacks); also, Oingo Boingo’s Insanity (Medium Version).
It seems I prefer angry songs to sad songs. :P
Strangly enough, Let it Bleed, and later Soul Asylum’s album w/runaway train.
