If you ask someone "do you smoke?" and they reply "cigarettes?" are they inadvertently telling you they smoke pot?

Sometimes. You have to look them in the face. You will get the pot head glint.
Knowing it is all cool.
Not really. What if they smoke ham?
No. They’re just trying to clarify what you’re asking about.
lol it’s more about their body language when they say cigarettes than anything else. I know people who ask which they’re being asked when they don’t smoke pot.
Maybe they want to make sure you don’t mean pot, because they don’t smoke that, but do smoke cigarettes.
Maybe deliberately, not inadvertently. Maybe making a little joke. Maybe saying what they think you mean. I might form a hypothesis on that response, but I wouldn’t draw a conclusion.
No, they are telling you they smoke crack
Generally I guess, although I might question that as I roll my own smokes (not weed) and don’t really like cigarettes much.
Speaking from a past life of pot smoking.
When a person asks if you smoke. Either I will in a subtle way say, “Cigarettes?”
That is code for, is there pot involved?
If the person asking, “do you smoke:, is a pot smoker and you reply no. They will either push the issue to see if you smoke pot or by the tone of your “no” will know you do not smoke.
If a smoker asks if you smoke but is not a pot smoker they will ask if you have a cigarette. But usually, unless you are holding a cigarette in your hand, no one is going to ask.
If you are taking to a potential date on the phone and during the “grilling” you are asked if you smoke. You will either say “yes” or “no” if you are just a smoker or non smoker.
A pot person will push the issue, “do you mean cigarettes?”
I think if you ask someone if they smoke you are asking if they smoke pot, and it should need no clarification. I don’t care if someone smokes cigarettes, unless they smell, at which point I already know they do. If I wanted one I would look for a smoker to ask. Pot is different because people (smart ones) don’t advertise that they smoke, it is necessary to ask. If someone asks “do you mean ciggarettes?” it does not imply that they smoke or not, only that they are completly oblivious.
Surely there must be people out there who still smoke cigars or pipes.
Fyrius – The pic you have of the dog would look so good with a pipe in his or hers mouth.
:-)
@Fyrius I smoke cigars occasionally, only smoked a pipe once, wasn’t that enamoured with it.
Yea, pretty much. Or that if they did smoke, they would only smoke weed, not cigs
No, I don’t think it means they smoke pot. I’ve been asked the same thing before and replied, “Cigarettes?”. Partly because I thought the person asking might smoke pot, so I wanted to clarify, and partly because so many people do smoke pot that I wanted to be sure they were talking about cigarettes.
@fireside: Mad props for the Dazed and Confused reference!
I am a pot smoker, and I do ask for clarification when asked if I smoke because I don’t smoke cigarettes or cigars (or crack for that matter), but I do smoke weed and occasionally hookah. People who ask for clarification are just trying to make sure they know what you mean. It is perfectly probable that they will say no, they don’t smoke anything.
i smoke cigarettes and still ask… the reason for this is because when my step dad was living with us we wold smoke cigars over brandy…. and on ocasion i have been known to enjoy pipe tobacco…. so i make a distinction.
It is not an indicator. Maybe they do smoke pot, maybe they don’t.
From experience, I would say that a pot smoker would know that the person was referring to cigarettes if the question was phrased this way. If I wanted to know if a person smokes pot, I would use a gesture that referred to smoking a joint. Plus you pretty much have to be 99% sure that someone smokes pot before asking. If someone asked me if I smoked I would just think they meant cigs. In my opinion if the person asks if you mean cigarettes then they probably are not a pot smoker.
That’s not so inadvertent.
When the doctor asks if I smoke, I say no. If she asks do I do recreational drugs, I tell her I smoke a little crip.
I assume they’re letting me know they don’t smoke weed. When people ask if I smoke, I purposely say, “only cigarettes”.
Maybe they don’t want you to think that they smoke during sex because of all the friction and they are sensitive to the ingredients in typical lubes.
generally when someone who smokes pot asks someone else if they smoke i think more times than not they will make a little gesture or wink or something. where as if theyre asking about cigarettes they’ll probably already have them out. pot smokers just have that sparkle ;)
when someone asks me if I smoke I say, ” no I don’t smoke cigarettes ” :-)
I think it does infer the smoking of pot. Then again, they might not smoke either. Usually if you are not already smoking a cigarette and ask the question their reply might be that. I smoke both.
Whenever I ask someone, I mean pot. Whenever I’ve been asked, they meant pot.
