How do you pitch a new program to the studio?

Asked by f4a (601points) August 6th, 2009

when pitching a new program, do you need an entire season (13 episodes or more) already planned out? Or is it only, characters and plot? Does one only need to pitch the Pilot episode? and when they accept it, thats the time they’ll do the rest of the episodes? How does one do this? Do they send it through mail? How to legalized it, so no one can copy it? Any information you can give will be helpful. Has anyone done this before or knows anyone, please share the experience. Thank you.

If you aren’t an established writer/producer with a proved track record then you are probably wasting your time. It isn’t that easy.

You just need a pilot. Actually a pilot script Then if given the green light. A piolt is produced. If that tests well. You are then contracted for blocks of 13 episodes at a time .

The best thing you can do for your pitch in today’s world is to write 5 episodes and shoot an independent pilot. Everyone’s becoming a jack of all trades in this business and execs will want to see why/how your show is going to make them money. If they see your writing is solid and it translates well onto television (your pilot) they’ll be interested in it but probably still won’t pick it up. Harsh truth of a crazy business.

Many people don’t realise that most publishers, studios etc., receive thousands of unsolicited manuscripts every year, sometimes every month. You need more than a good plot and treatment, you need an agent. One who has already got the right contacts. That is hard, but not as hard as trying to approach a studio directly.
