Who was the first to mix Pop-punk and Hardcore?

Asked by jaketheripper (2779points) August 6th, 2009

Nowadays we have a slew of bands blending the bright catchy melodies and hook laden riffing of pop punk with the intensity and rhythmic stylings of hardcore (Set Your Goals, Four Year Strong, Daggermouth). I would like to know who was the first to do so. My best guess is Set Your Goals but I’m not sure.

Looking into the history of pop punk, it’s essentially a combination of Hardcore Punk and Pop Music.

In some ways, it sounds like you’re talking more about “Old School” Pop Punk, like The Descendents in the 80’s, rather than contemporary main stream pop punk, like Blink-182, Green Day, or New Found Glory.

Alexisonfire would be my first choice. Maybe Scary Kids Scaring Kids..

But I couldn’t say the first that went in that direction.

It could be just me, but Bad Religion is much easier to listen to than some other punk bands.

i think we are on the wrong track here. With the exception of the first answer i dont think you guys know what im talking about. Im talking about the slew of bands that started popping up around 3 years ago. They play fast pop punk with occasional screamed sections and hardcore style beat-downs.
bpeoples you kinda had the right idea but im talking about bands that now mix the very distinct final products of hardcore and pop punk

@drdoombot thats because they are better than most punk bands

@jaketheripper Funny thing called “research” =)

Anyway, the easiest way to figure this out would be to put Set Your Goals into Pandora, and watch for older bands with the right sound. I haven’t been into punk for 10 years, so I don’t know where the current trends are!
