Is it possible to increase the maximum RAM on a computer?

Asked by haegenschlatt (122points) August 6th, 2009

I have an HP desktop that, according to the manual, can support a maximum RAM of 2 GB (2×1GB RAM). Is it possible to increase this maximum amount? Also, if I put more than 2 GB of ram in there, what will happen?

There is this thing called “overclocking ram” that my friend keeps insisting I do to make my games run faster, but I have never personally tried it. I’m sure if you google search it you’ll find loads of helpful information. Sorry I cannot be more helpful.

Sure, if you buy a new motherboard. If you put more RAM in than what is supported, it will (at best) simply not be recognized.

The amount of effective ram that you can have on your computer is going to be dependant on three things:

-Number of slots on your motherboard
-The OS that you’re running – for example 32bit operating systems can only address 4G
-The amount of money you’re willing to spend

@thrice2k3 If I’m running a 64-bit OS, and I put more than the maximum RAM inside, will it still be recognized?

You can check for a BIOS update which might do this, but if it does not, I think it’s time to start shopping for a new motherboard. There’s some good deals out there than won’t kill your wallet.

Most people think the limit on the amount of RAM you can put into a computer is the number of slots available, but this is only partially true.

Another factor (which comes into play in your case) is the number of addressing lines that go to the RAM. Every location in RAM (every one of those 2Gb) has a specific address pattern; soft of like a street address.

1 gig of RAM requires 30 address lines. Your computer only has 30 address lines. You could put bigger RAM modules into the slots (perhaps) but you still wouldn’t be able to address more that 1 gig because you still only have 30 lines. You computer will still think it has a total of 2 gigs.
