Does it bother anyone else that you'll never be able to see your face the way others see it?

Asked by ryancp (32points) August 6th, 2009

It’s always only through a reflection. We’re not able to leave our body (that we know of?), go out a few feet and look back at our physical face how other people can.

All you need is a video cam with a flip function.

Ta’da!

Yes, totally. Regardless of reflection or mirrors that might enable people to view themselves from a few feet away, none of us will ever be able to view ourselves the way other people do. I always wonder about stuff like that. What do I look like to that person? I wish I could know.

@DrasticDreamer Yea! I’m not weird :P

Yes it does

Nah I am happy enough with video and photographical evidence to realise that I look ugly and act like a twot.

@DrasticDreamer I totally agree, I always wonder about that too. I guess it just depends on who’s eyes your looking through, people’s opinions on appearances differs from person to person. :P

a japanese researcher has built an android that has his face.

Nah. Every single person sees differently. Reflections and film are not accurate presentations. Hmm…if everyone and everything see me as something different, do I have one, essential self?

desiree333's avatar

@tinyfaery yes, but only you knows who that is.

tinyfaery's avatar

An essential self. Maybe I should have said “a true face?”.

Honestly, this used to drive me crazy when I was younger. I would go through periods of time when I almost obsessed about it! Thank God I am old enough now to no longer care. :P

Even if one could do it, it would not be accurate. You would also need to remove the rose tinted filter from deep within your brain.

Nah. Doesn’t bother me in the least.

dannyc's avatar

I like that as many two-faced people I know cannot see who I am in any case.

samanthabarnum's avatar

A little, but does it really matter? It’s just physical appearance.

DrasticDreamer's avatar

It doesn’t so much matter to me or bother me – it just drives me insane with curiosity.

samanthabarnum's avatar

@DrasticDreamer Get a video camera and record yourself—boom, got your answer.

DrasticDreamer's avatar

@samanthabarnum—Not the same. You’ll still see yourself the way you already see yourself. Someone else may see you completely differently than you’re capable of seeing yourself.

It bothers me more that I’ll never know what I really sound like. Voice recorders, leaving messages on a phone, etc. – all the machines will alter your voice somewhat. And if you just speak out loud, your ears still won’t capture what your voice sounds like to others.

I’ve occasionally caught a glimpse of myself in a mirror when I wasn’t expecting to see myself, sounds weird, but it happens and for a brief second, I assume I am seeing myself as others see me. Mostly because it takes a split second to recognize that it is me. That’s as close as I’ve come to seeing myself as others do.

I always wonder about about colours.

you’re red will never be my red, nor will mine be yours. I always wonder what vibrant hue I’ll never experience in my life that someone else sees every day.

I’ve had an out of body experience as a child and I wasn’t that impressed with looking at myself but other people enjoy it to the point I get quite giddy.

wundayatta's avatar

I’m glad I can’t see me the way others see me in one sense. Yet I would like to know, if they thought of me in a positive light. The thing is, you never can know until your are in their head. I think I kind of prefer not knowing for sure, because then I can pretend they might have a positive view of me while believing in my heart that they don’t.

Hatsumiko's avatar

@erniefernandez: That is why I love you. I was thinking the same thing!

nebule's avatar

sometimes I get a glimpse of what I think others see when I’m on camera… and I don’t like what I see… I look so much better from my perspective… so yes it does bother me…but I’m kinda glad it is the way it is…

Psychedelic_Zebra's avatar

@augustlan I don’t care about that whole face thing now that I’m old, what bugs me is what gravity is doing to my body. Someday we’ll look like this
