How do I motivate myself to do work I really do not want to do?

Asked by nicolas (46points) August 7th, 2009

I have work that I must have finished by the end of this month, and I’m having a really difficult time keeping myself motivated to sit down and work on it. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could get this work done efficiently by the end of the month and avoid procrastinating ?

Don’t ask me. I am on Fluther instead of working!

just plow thru it and get it done. rather than put it off, use the idea of being done with it to finish it, and then relax.

Go to a homeless shelter. That should motivate you.

Simple rewards. Work for five hours and reward yourself with a nice dinner or beer.

Break it into little pieces and set the goal of just getting one piece done.

Take a break.

Do the next piece.

Someone told me about a trick that’s supposed to help you get over slump of non-working. I forget the exact proportions, but it’s something like 50 minutes on, 12 minutes off. So, set an alarm and force yourself to work for 50 minutes, then give yourself a 12-minute break. Just adjust the numbers accordingly for you so that it’s actually doable. Maybe 45/10 or 35/5.

What kind of work?—schoolwork, a job assignment, task at home? What is the reason for doing the work or the purpose of the work?

Get to bed early. Have breakfast. Go for a walk.
Sounds to me you are a bit depressed, and over tired.

Or, you are having too much fun.

Try to remember if you don’t get paid you don’t eat.

dig up some memories of mean stuff you’ve done, and consider it karma. (;

I had this same problem my first year of working out of college. Turns out I had adult ADHD and could just never keep focus long enough to find interest in what I was doing. Keeping in close communication with my doctor, we developed a solid diet, exercise, and pharmaceutical regimen to help me out. It has done wonders. Not that drugs are the answer, but health in general probably is a good place to start.

Just remember how proud you will feel once you have completed your task .
Keep the T.V. off , turn peaceful music on , take breaks when needed .
