I’m going to Canada next year with the Scouts (I’m from Scotland) and will be in groups of 4 with atleast $300 each in cash. For a bit more security, I’m planing to place some money in a travel card, but I can’t find one. Any ideas?

You should have a bank/Checking acoount. I’m 16 and have a debit card. I can use it anywhere.
My bank server is Wells Fargo…so I don’t know if you have those in Scotland.
BTW welcome to Fluther! :)
Ever thought of travellers cheques?
If you are using switch/solo in everyday use ring your bank and let them know the dates you will be abroad and where you are going and they should be able to allow your card to work there, same goes for Visa Debit.
Have fun in Canada, and don’t wander off, it’s a fucking big place to get lost in !!
First of all, I have a bank account with cars at the Bank Of Scotland. I talked to them today, and there international facilities don’t exsist for debit customers (me) full stop. So I started to look at cards like the Caxton FX currency card, but what I’m asking is either:
a)Is there a card like the Caxton FX Card that students can apply for.
Or..
b)A bank in Canada (like RBC, or TD Canada Trust) that issues temporary / instant “one time or refillable” debit / credit card.
Thanks again for all everyones help
I’d never heard of anything like a Caxton FX Card, but after looking it up, it seems to me that you can actually get one of those. If you’re not over 18, your parents or anyone else over 18 can get one for you. This way you don’t have to get to a bank once in Canada.
If you’re old enough, I would highly recommend opening a checking account with a MasterCard/Visa debit card. I got mine when I was 17, but I think you can get them at 16 or younger in some places. It will serve you well for this purpose and any future situations like this. Before using it, you’ll usually be required to sign/enter a PIN password and many banks (well, Bank of America, at least) are now putting your photo on the card, so it’s pretty secure. Make sure to bring all the cash you’re going to need, though, because you’ll most likely get charged a fee if you try to withdraw cash in Canda (unless you’re at an ATM from your bank).
If you don’t want to do that, they have Visa/MasterCard gift cards. You can use them like credit/debit cards and some can be reloaded. They have much less security, though, but are still better than cash.
Travelers Checks would be another option, but I’ve never used them and don’t know quite how they work.
