Does anybody want to join me in celebrating Singapore's National Day today?
Today, the 9 August, marks Singapore’s 44th birthday. This tiny island I live on is a marvelous place and I’d just like to share a live webcast they’re having of the National Day Parade. It’s only just started as of right now and you can see it here. Of course since right now’s an ungodly hour for many Flutherites I doubt that this video will be seen by many but I’d just like to broaden the horizons of the collective in including this tiny island into the minds of all. I’m open to questions on Singapore if anyone’s curious (for a start, if you don’t know what the heck Singapore is or where it is, it’s a tiny island country located in South East Asia [see map for reference]).
Enjoy and celebrate!
I’m gonna hear the fireworks where I live, and will probably take a look on television, after which I’ll see the premiere of Singapore Idol, one of the true comedies of my country

Chewing gum! Banned! Genius. It costs quite a few million a year to keep the streets clean of the stuff, as people keep spitting on it. When I first came to London, I thought all they greyish white-ish spots on the pavements were decorations. ‘Twas not so.
I remember celebrating it with you back in 1988. Didn’t know it would be the national holiday, I just happened to be there. Very hot, very loud, very humid, very bright. Overall impressive, with concerts everywhere, and a city that never sleeps (but from what I hear it doesn’t sleep anyway). The food at our hotel was brilliant and plentiful. But the overall impression is still the sticky heat and how I longed for an air-conditioned room.
No, I would not want to celebrate a flashy show of propaganda, weapons and fireworks whose purpose is to fool a 3 million people into thinking that it belong to an actual country when it has the cultural, historical, social unity of a burning donkey. No I don’t want to appreciate a President who no one voted for or a Cabinet government who is in power due to subtle tricks and hidden gerrymandering in the last election, in all the elections. No I don’t want to celebrate a socially and culturally failed people who are being masked behind an ignorant veil of economic prosperity and are unaware of their vanished Civil rights and liberties. So Singapore can take its propaganda show and day and stuff it straight up Sweet Lee’s aging arsehole.
Plus those airplanes are a waste of taxpayers money.
Hail Singapore and Happy 44th Birthday!
@aronnax a little cynical and bitter are we?
Happy National Day to Singapore. May the celebrations be fun, safe and memorable.
Happy Birthday to Singapore! And may he/she have many more! Be safe and have fun!
Enjoy your day, @Saturated_Brain, together with all other Singaporeans. I have been to Singapore around five times and I have always enjoyed it sincerely.
And a happy 44th birthday to Singapore!
Happy birthday, Singapore!
Anybody speaks singaporean language ?
@mea05key There is no ‘Singaporean language’, although there is almost a dialect called ‘Singlish’, basically English with a lot of Chinese and some Malay and Indian influence. And yes, I am Singaporean.
Happy Belated Birthday!
Singapore has four official languages: English, Mandarin, Tamil and Malay. The unofficial one is Singlish.
Happy happy Birthday Singapore!
@aronnax It sounds like you’re talking about America…...
