Knitters out there are you willing to share your tips and hints ?

Asked by sandystrachan (4417points) August 10th, 2009

I will use google , but i wondered if you wouldn’t mind with sharing some hints tips and must buys . Google wouldn’t give the best response and Google might lie , i would love proper people, people i could trust to lead me the right way .
Now i have never ever knitted before so am an absolute beginner , is there better needles i hope that’s what they are called that would be best to use what brand of wool would be a better wool to use. One that won’t wear out fast or anything , what would be the best thing to start with is there any sites you would recommend also .

I have wanted to knit for years but never had the will to start it , i am 27 and male not that makes any difference i just thought i would add it .

My first tip, use Youtube! There are tons of free video tutorials that will teach you everything. Here’s one person: Knittingtipsbyjudy

My second tip, go to your local second hand store and see if there is a package of used knitting needles. Every time I go in to my local store, there is a variety pack, I have paid $5 for 2 packs, totaling something like 30 pairs of needles of all sizes including circular and sock needles. By far, this is the best way to get a variety of needles for cheap. Of course there’s no problems with going to the craft store and buying new ones either.

Brand of wool doesn’t really matter, just buy a color you like at a reasonable price. Don’t go for any special wool with pom poms or a fancy art wool, just get a simple one like a plain old sport yarn. I would probably buy acrylic yarn now because you’re going to be learning, so don’t spend money on a high end fancy yarn until you know what you want to knit for yourself. Then again, if you’re the kind of person who is motivated by quality, maybe it’s worth splurging on wool yarn if you plan on making something like a scarf for yourself. Bonus tip: the second hand store often has packages of yarn as well!

I would probably start by knitting something really easy like a coaster or a washcloth. A scarf is also easy.

I use YouTube and a site called www.threadbanger.com a lot. When I first started I would just search for things like “how to knit” and “how to knit a scarf” and look at several of the videos that popped up.

I would start with big yarn and big needles, like Size 13 needles or so and a nice thick worsted weight wool (it’ll say this on the package, if you’re not sure, find where it says what size needles to use with it, look for something between 10 and 15). This way, for one, it’s easier to see what you’re doing, and number two, it won’t take as long as using skinny yarn and needles, so your first project won’t seem so overwhelming.

I think you need to join Ravelry .

I found another pattern that would be perfect for you @sandystrachan. It is this simple scarf pattern from youtube. The only sttich you need to know is the simple knit, which you can find on youtube easy, as well as casting on (that’s creating the stitches at the beginning), as well as wrapping the yarn around without making a stitch (illustrated in the link). I just knitted this up as a sample and it looks amazing, it’s surprisingly lacy and impressive for a simple knit!

For needs I prefer bamboo ones. I absolutely cannot use the metal ones. Everything slips off for me and its much harder and overall I strongly dislike them.

Wow cool THANKS subscribed to the youtube videos, signed up to the websites and thanks for the advice .
And once again thanks to @ everyone .

I did home economics cooking & sewing in secondary school and pretty much ever since then i have wanted to knit , @dynamicduo i normally go to second hand stores for things they are a wonderful invention . If they don’t have needles i am sure the old ladies who work there might or know someone who does . In your video link “knittingtipsbyjudy ” she shows very slowly that casting on you mentioned , her videos look very informative and clear i am also going to ask her advice when needed .
@La_chica_gomela Thanks for the site i really like it , i will be using the interwebs and glad i asked the question here cause it helps with what to look for . Big needles big wool / yarn will remember that .
@lercio Thanks for that site , it is very helpful :D
When i am skilled and confident enough i would love to make a but more like one on this site obviously . . . -Oh when i told my wife i was going to start knitting , she laughed so hard for about 5 minutes non stop . I asked why laugh and she said ” *KNITTING YOU and started laughing again .

She won’t laugh when you present her with a beautiful scarf ;)

Actually, there are a lot of men who knit. You can find tons of men knitting groups and blogs. And of course you can start your own and add yours too! I am currently writing a blog about fleece processing and yarn making.

Q: Knitted slippers , wouldn’t they wear out real fast ?

@dynamicduo: Ooh, cool!!! Can I read your blog?

I wish someone had told me when I first started knitting that it’s easier to knit with circular needles that straight ones. I knit probably 99% of my projects on circulars. I only own one pair of straight needles. You don’t have to worry about your needles slipping of your knitting as much and it’s easier on your wrists.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

@knitfroggy: What brand of needle do you use? That’s what I need to get! I didn’t like using my circular needle that much because of having to pull the yarn over the joins all the time. It’s annoying and it takes forever, and I just found out on Ravelry today that there are actually circulars that don’t have that big bump that mine has (Clovers, I think).

knitfroggy's avatar

I don’t like the Clovers because of those bumps. I have a pair and I never use them. I do like the Clover double points though, they are ok. I have a couple pair of addi turbo, that I paid a lot of money for and they aren’t that impressive. I’ve heard a lot of good things about the addi turbo, but I prefer my Susan Bates Quicksilver. That is what I first bought and I love them. I have had a couple pair since I started knitting in 2001.
