How do you feel about book clubs?

Have you ever been part of a random book club? Did you enjoy it? What were the benefits of reading books as part of a book club rather than reading them for simple private pleasure? Were there any cons (not liking the book choices, maybe)?

I am considering joining a completely random book club in my city. They appear to meet once a month and discuss the book that was chosen by a particular member at the previous meeting. It doesn’t sound very demanding or time consuming, but I think it would be interesting to be exposed to new books, people, and perspectives.

How have people found book clubs to be? Are they a worthwhile investment of time or no?
