Why will my desktop not detect any cameras?
This morning I tried to copy some photos from my Nikon Coolpix onto my computer but the camera was not detected. I have also tried to connect 2 other cameras which are not recognised either. If, however, I plug them into my brother’s laptop then they work fine.
Also, if I plug any other USB device into my computer they work as normal – it just appears to be my cameras that are not working.
I have never faced this problem before and have tried different cables and different ports but still no cameras. I have also tried to connect them on both Ubuntu and XP but both systems are ignoring them. The problem is obviously not with them as they still work on the laptop.
Any suggestions?

Throw your desktop out the window.
Replace.
In all seriousness that sounds freaking weird, I’ve never encountered anything like that.
Try using device manager to see if they are installed as unrecognized devices, uninstall them, and then use the applet to search for hardware changes.
Two things that spring to mind:
1. Are the USB ports on the desktop powered?
2. Is it definitely USB 2.0?
Hmmm. We have 2 Nikon CoolPix cameras that run on my desk top with XP. Never a problem. I’d say uninstall the program & install it again. Reload the disc if necessary.
Well, in reply to those – I’m going to go back to XP shortly and dig around the device manager and see what I can find. As for the actual USB ports – yes they are all powered, including those on my USB hub – they are all 2.0, except the ones on the front of the tower and none of them are liking my cameras.
By digging around on a couple of Ubuntu forums I’ve managed to find a couple of people with vaguely similar problems but not resolved yet. So, time to go back and see what I can do in XP! Thanks for suggestions so far.
