Can I use an iPod touch as a pseudo-GPS device?

Asked by smart1979 (442points) January 14th, 2008

I’m looking to pick up a gps device, but am also thinking about getting an ipod. Will the Touch function as an all-in-one?

The next version of the iPhone software is supposed to contain the Google Triangulation software. Since it relies on cellular coverage, it won’t work on the Touch.

Looks like with the new update, it has google-maps, and searches for nearby wi-fi access points to try to determine wherre you are. Can’t be as good as a Garmin or something like that, but it could be pretty useful!.

I’m finding the Google Maps update works pretty well, here in Birmingham UK. Quite a few of the wifi hotspots I connect to are in the Skyhook database Apple are using. Of course I’m not exactly lost at home, and I suspect that when I’m lost in China it’ll prove useless. Cool though :-)

I live south of boston, so I dont know how well it will work, since I’m in a rural area, but, it should help me find my way around when I’m in town.
