I accidentally closed a word document on a mac before saving. Is there anyway to recover this unsaved document?
specifically, if I close word, but do not restart my macbook – is there a temp folder which contains the unsaved text

not that I know off, but I will join you on your search for an answer.
If word allowed you to close the document without saving and didn’t prompt you to save the file then there should be an autosaved version on your desktop or in you documents folder. It will be what ever the title of the document was originally with (Autosaved) at the end of the title.
if i am not mistaken, while editing a document the date is stored in RAM, so unless it autosaves when you close the application, the data after the last save is lost.
Word for Mac, at least the version I have, is standard configured to autosaves yourr changes every ten minutes. It does that at a location that is specified under your preferences (command+,) for word. The problem is that these files get deleted if you close Word in a proper way. That is, when you say no to “save or not save?” at the terminating the program.
I couldn’t find anything on the net about it, but maybe you can look in that directory (standard setting is your documents folder) and start time machine if you have that setup. You may then restore it and word will start up with the document next time you start it up.
Otherwise, you will have to retype. I sincerely feel for you.I have done that and been there as well.
If you do a search for files changed today as the only chriteria you may find some back up docs created by microsoft and or apple in places that you didn’t think of. I will run a test.
I am sorry, I ran some tests and as far as I can see there is no way to recover the file if it was a new file that had not been saved or automatically saved unless you had some sort of key recording software or feature running.
