Jim Brickman is an excellent musician whom you will most likely enjoy.
For a long time he was affiliated with Wyndham Hill. Browsing their catalog should yield good results as they are known for primarily “New Age” type of music.
Relax to?
Grey – Ani DiFranco
Final Blu – Sergio Altamura (though this does ramp up significantly towards the end, it is so well composed in terms of flow… well, just watch it.)
Kokomo – The Beach Boys (go ahead and laugh. I friggin’ love this song.)
Falling Down – Muse (might be out of your musical taste, but hell. Check it out.)
Ashes in the Sea – Antoine Dufour (perhaps not relaxing, in the conventional sense. But a very nice piece.)
The Blower’s Daugher – Damien Rice (Sad song. Will relax you, though.)
9 Crimes – Damien Rice (If you liked the song above, you will like this one.)
And All That Could Have Been – Nine Inch Nails (Quite possibly one of my favorite songs of all time. Excellent usage of Requiem for a Dream. If you liked that, you will like this and this)
Nights in White Satin – The Moody Blues (Can’t go wrong with TMB. Isn’t their most calming of songs, but whenever this song comes on, I sway back and forth like a moron.)
Mother – Cover of Christina Aguilera… which is a cover of John Lennon (This guy has some pipes on him. Wow. Just close your eyes. As for Christina Aguilera, yes. Don’t shoot me. It’s probably the only song of her’s I liked. I was working at Starbucks years ago when her rendition came on. I stopped what I was doing and perked my ears up. Thinking of my shit state of life that I was in at the time, I got all emotional and stuff. Her version can be found here. I think she did the original justice.)
Anything by Boards Of Canada, especially their album Music Has The Right To Children.
Also, NIN has some really cool instrumental stuff on Ghosts.
You might try anything by Steve Roach or Vidna Omana
The Pure Moods collection!
I think the best music you could chill to is anything Thievery Corperation, they an amazing down tempo group
I Like somafm.com – Drone Zone or Space Station; great stuff for chillin…
I have a few sound generators on my iPhone that play the sounds of the ocean, rainforest, whale’s song, white noise, campfires, chimes, and just about anything you could imagine! My favorite sound to sleep to is “Kitten Purring” in the program called Ambiance.
Aphex Twin – Selected Ambience
‘Music for Airports’ (Pts 1+2) and ‘An Ending (ascent)’, by Brian Eno.
Should do the trick.
Miles Davis Kind of Blue.
@jmah Zero 7 are excellent. I especially love ‘When it Falls’ .
The album Soulful Filling by General Fuzz.
It’s sooo chill I absolutely love it.
Plus, you can dowload the album for freeeee!
Brian Eno – “Music for Airports”
or
the whispering of the wind stirring the leaves in a tall tree.
Take your choice – there is no wrong answer with either of these two.
I listened to some Eno today…I loved it but!... feeling a little depressed anyway made me feel a little like lying down and giving up…so maybe that’s a little too chilled.. or maybe I’m not ready for chilled yet?
I also listened to…
Prefuse 73..bit severe…
Zero 7…not sure…
Damian Rice I love anyway…could melt me into the rest of my days…
Carlos Nakai…hmmmm…very pan pipe and mellow… liked it in an odd way..
Couldn’t find Planet Caravan… or General Fuzz
but working on the rest… thank you all I lurve you all so much for doing this for me… xxx
OK, I have one more for you. Please check out the CD How Could Anyone by Libby Roderick.
@lynneblundell i linked to the General Fuzz website in my answer, and you can listen to the songs there or download the whole albums free because it’s under creative commons license :)
oh right..sorry..I’m a bit slow at the moment!! x thank you x
just downloaded some.. it’s lovely…I think it’s the sort of thing I’m looking for x
The whole of ‘Seconds Out’ by Genesis.
A treat.
I think music by John Huling is good for times like that. It has a south west USA native American sound. A good example is his “Ancient Canyons” CD among many others. Also he has music that is of an aquatic nature he calls “Jelly Music”. Sort of like the background effect music you might hear at Seaworld Give it a try if you haven’t yet. You can google him for the catalog WC
Oh and others worth an ear is Andreas Vollenwieder. maybe I spelled that wrong, but if you get far enough with a search you will see harp music in the new age section. That’s him. Another one is Deep Forest which is different fore sure. Also look into Kitaro’s “Tenku” and “Silk Road” CD’s. And then there is always Tangerine Dream. WC
Yes welcome and many thanks woodcutter I will check those out later today x
Thievery Cooperation is amazing, all of there music is good
@lynneblundell cool, those artists I mentioned there have been around for a long time. I’m sort of stuck in the past with my tunes
I have this ambiance playlist on my ipod. Only two “songs” and it’s just a soft rainstorm that plays for an hour or so. Really relaxing when I can’t sleep.
The most relaxing music I have heard is The Dark Link (www.thedarklink.com), it basically puts me to sleep like a baby. And I have listende to a lot of chillout/lounge/ambient music.
