Help! I’m turning 25 this year and want to move interstate. I’m currently living at home with the family in a large country town and have a good government job that pays me well. I’m unhappy. I have said for a long time that I wanted to move but have never had the oppurtune time approach. I have two more months before I can leave, but what are some ground work steps that I can start undertaking to get the ball rolling? I was thinking of contacting job agencies etc, but have never lived away from home (bar some overseas stints) and have gotten scared.

Make sure you’re guaranteed a job there before you move.
How do you go about securing an interstate job then?
Find a job, then find a place to live. Doing it the other way around is potentially disastrous.
If you have money saved, and you check in advance that there are a fair number of openings in your field, you could just take the plunge and move to the city. Once there, make finding a job your full-time goal.
Your young, just go if you have some money. It is much easier to get a job when you already live somewhere. If you can go somwhere that you have at least one friend or family member that you can crash for a few weeks that might make things easier. I’m guessing if it doesn’t work out you can always go home…so it’s an adventure!
I did that, after college I moved to Florida, I stayed with a distant cousin for a couple of weeks and then a friend for a couple of weeks and by then I found a roommate to live with and a job. My job wasn’t the perfect job, but it was good enough and a lot of people my age worked there (really all ages it is FL after all) so I made new friends, and I loved living in FL.
Since you work for government, any possibility of a job transfer?
@MagsRags an interstate job transfer would be ideal, but the department that i am working for has just undergone a restructure and i dont have permancy. My boss has told me to stick in there and i will get it, but who knows how long that will take – and even then, i would have to wait another 6 months after i get permancy until the probation period is up.
