Is there a free "unzipping" program for Vista Ultimate 64 bit?

Winzip tells me my trial is over. What’s good and free?

Vista has a native app already associated with zip files that will handle this for you.

As @pdworkin said, vista has a native zip tool.

If you have .rar and other archives, then 7zip is the best.

WinZip and WinRar are terrible.

7zip will also work, and supports a lot more formats.
I hate the windows inegrated unzip function. too much hassle to go through the assistant each time.

There are tons of free zipping/unzipping programs. 7zip is popular.
Here is a link to a list of free zip programs link

@PerryDolia, so I uninstall WinZip, and click on my zip download and Vista takes over? Thanks. I’ll try it!.

It works! It created the .exe file that I moved to the desktop. Thanks!

7zip is also the only free one that fully utilizes multithreading. Modern quadcore processors can handle 8 threads and so will 7zip. That’s more important for speed and stability then 64bit support.

Still there is a 64bit version.

@ragingloli Wow…. People say im too mean, but you sir, are stupid.

1st off, there is a free trial. Key word free.
2nd The “trial” lasts 60 days…. ive used the “trial” for about 3 years now without uninstalling and reinstalling…..

Its like LimeWire, they say the free edition is only a trial; but the trial never truly ends.

well i can install windows, then modify it so the 30 day period never runs out, but it does not make windows free.

that is negligence on the programmer’s part. the license agreement clearly states that you have to buy the software if you want to continue to legally use it. “free” means legally using without paying. by using winrar over the trial period you are illegally using it without paying, thus the software is not “free”.

7zip is both free as in beer and free as in speech.

Am I the last serious poster? Stay on topic, this is about someone looking for the best Zip program to suit him.

Found what you’re looking for Quagmire?

Quagmire's avatar

Yeah. It seems Vista will do it for me, and, since I’m hearing so much about it, I downloaded and installed 7zip as well! Thanks.

My comment was serious.

Theres now a 64 bit version of 7zip that works very well. I’d highly recommend using it.
