How do you change the VOB (dvd recorded format) into AVI or other editable formats?

Asked by Fernspider (3597points) August 17th, 2009

I bought a video camera awhile ago which records onto little DVD’s. I was told I could put the recorded data on to my computer hard drive for uploading to youtube etc.

I recently uploaded these recordings to my computer a found that they all upload as one file with various chapters. The footage can be viewed in media player but I have been unable to edit, cut or format the video.

Attempts to download software which can change the format into an editable format have prooved fruitless.

Does anyone know how to change the VOB (dvd recorded format) into AVI or other editable formats?

Try Handbrake and convert it to something else. Are they vob files?

Yeah, I believe they are VOB files. When converted and then used with a program like Movie Maker, the file only works for lilke 2 seconds and then stops. Very odd.

So tempted to sell it and buy a more user friendly camera. One that records onto an SD card or Flash Drive.

Anyone have good user friendly video cameras?

Handbrake…. No real suggestions on cameras, though.

VOB’s are just MPEG’s in a different container. Changing the extension to .mpg makes it editable in the most popular video editing suites.

@martijn86 – so if I saved as .mpg… that would change the file to be editable?

just rename the .vob part to .mpg
