Puppy house training issues?
My puppy is 5 months old and having issues with toilet training. I have been told by several sources that there can be increased difficulty with smaller dogs or dogs of his breed and toilet training.
He is a maltichon (maltese x bichon frise).
We have made huge efforts with him (ie puppy classes, positive reinforcement etc) but he still seems to prefer pooing inside.
We take him out and he pees outside in the lawn and then plays around in the lawn for up to 15 minutes. Once inside, he then poos.
Does anyone else have issues with this or advice?

Have you attempted crate training? There is a lot of info on the Web. In one way you may consider yourself lucky—Bichons who are easily toilet trained tend to be nasty to people. Sweet Bichons tend to have toilet problems.
Welcome to Fluther. Lurve.
Have him poo on the newspaper, then move the papers outside.
@pdworkin – yep have done crate training. He never toilets in his crate or his playpen (which he is confined to for a few hours each day in our absence to avoid chewing of precious items of ours!).
Nice to know about the bichon info though, very interesting! He has got an incredibly loving and friendly nature which is definitely preferred to a nasty dog! lol
Perhaps he will grow out of it… until then I will need to continue reacting with embarrassing enthusiasm when he actually does poo outside ;)
I suggest that he go straight to the crate after urinating outside, then another visit out, wash, rinse, repeat.
what works better than a newspaper?
:)
I agree with filmfann. You need to get the poo smell outside. Next time he poops, take it outside and place it where you want him to go.
Also, is he going in the same place in the house? Make sure you use an enzyme-based product (available at pet supply stores) and thoroughly remove the odor.
Block that area off to him.
When you are home, keep him with you (same room) and watch him. If he makes like he’s going to go, grab him and say, “No, and carry him outside. He may or may not then poop depending on how badly he has to go.
When you are not home, I agree with crating him.
Good luck.
If he only does it when you are home, then you must watch him constantly and when he starts to go, scoop him up immediately, telling him no no no and get him outside to finish then praise. If you can’t be watching him then crate him whether you are home or not.
Of course they always say eliminate the possibility of a physical cause for the problem with a vet check first.
I just realized @Marina said all that, oh well makes it twice as credible.
The other old show dog trick is to insert the head of a paper match (do they still use them in USA, they don’t have them in oz???) into his rectum. Doesn’t hurt them but feels strange and they usually will poop within a few seconds. Then praise lavishly. Someone will probably say that is cruel but I never found it to be so.
I have the same problem with my dog. I have a shih tzu thats 5 years old. We tried everything you can imagine to get him to poop outside but he just wont. He could even be out for hours and will still wait until he gets intside. So we had no choice but to use these little puppy pads that he poops on right after being out side. Hopefully yours will break that habit, good luck !:)
There’s something you can buy for indoor dogs. It’s similar to a litterbox for cats but resembles grass. sorry, I can’t remember the name at the moment. Maybe you can get that and have your puppy use that if nothing else when I see my puppy isin position about to do her business, I pick her up and put her outside and she does it there.
I was going to recommend crate trainging and the newspaper trick (ie: putting paper down in the house for pup to go on and then gradually moving it until it is completely outside) but as other people have already done this I will just agree that in my experience these are the best methods.
