Do you put cotton buds (q tip) in your ears?

Asked by noodle_poodle (1617points) August 18th, 2009

I know your not supposed to and it can damage your hearing but why is it so satisfying to clean your ears with cotton buds?...why would we evolve something like that? I mean if we were meant to scratch in there the hole would be bigger so that you could get yer hands in there (that sounded way dirtier than i meant it)

I do I just don’t push in. I circle around.

And only once has something popped out the other side when I sneezed.

ragingloli's avatar

yes.
it feels so good.

@teh_kvlt_liberal – that reminds me of an old SNL skit.

Sales Men have “Door to Door gasms”

janitors have “mop the floor gasms”

scamp's avatar

Yes I do. After showering, I can’t stand having water in my ears, so I swab it out with a Q-Tip, using the circular motion Bri_L mentions above. I can’t stand waxy ears!! They are yucky and itchy, so I keep my ears clean and clear as much as possible. I don’t use the “off brands” because once the cotton came off and got stuck in my ear.

You have to be very careful not to push wax into your ear, or use too much presure tho.

Bri_L.. Too funny!!

I use a flat tooth pick. Gets it all nice and clean.
Use the Q-tip to sweep up the dust.

noodle_poodle's avatar

@teh_kvlt_liberal rofl yeh totally…it just makes no sense at all what purpose does an eargasm have?

teh_kvlt_liberal's avatar

nothing
feels good man

noodle_poodle's avatar

@teh_kvlt_liberal do you think they exist for everyone or just for some?

@Bri_LTim Kazurinsky FTW! I’ve never been able to find a clip of that segment. And whatever happened to him?

I usually use a thin washcloth to clean my ears during my daily shower. But if it seems like a lot to deal with in there, I’ll use a cotton bud. I don’t feel anything especially pleasant from it, though.

teh_kvlt_liberal's avatar

(shrugs)
depends how itchy your ears are I guess

Facade's avatar

@teh_kvlt_liberal is right! it feels sooooo good. And I’ve used q-tips since I was a little girl.

Zaku's avatar

Yes, I need to and was instructed by my doctor for ear wax buildup. But I don’t go very far in at all – that would be dangerous.

and yes I do too
and it’s magnificent!
maybe that’s one thing that comforts me?

bright_eyes00's avatar

Yes I use Q-tips. Mostly for cleaning my belly button ring but after numerous ear infections as a child if I dont get the water out of my ears after I shower I get rather painful headaches. But I also dont shove the Q-tip into my ear canal.

janbb's avatar

@lynneblundell If the Q-tips do it for you, go for it, I says!

@teh_kvlt_liberal Much lurve for eargasms. Hilarious.

I, too, enjoy the comfort of a well poked – oops, cleaned – ear, but am careful not to poke too far. What else were Q-tips invented for?

drdoombot's avatar

I wear those earbuds that go inside your ear to block outside noise. It sucks to pull it out of your ear and have it covered with wax, so even though I know I’m not supposed to, I use Q-Tips to make sure it’s clean in there.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

Yes, I do. I have since I was little. You just have to know how far to push them in or you’ll puncture your eardrum.

OpryLeigh's avatar

I do, my doc tells me not to but I feel that my ears are much cleaner afterwards and it also feels so good

Resonantscythe's avatar

I do. I go in just deep enough to clean out the stuff that’s bothering me. And it feels sooo much better having the ear crap out.

YARNLADY's avatar

My doctor has told me to stop doing it. I just went in last Thursday because I couldn’t hear, and both ears were so impacted I had to have two sessions with the “ear shower machine”. I just now returned from the second session.

Hello; I am an Audiologist… this has been discussed a few times on Fluther, and there is more information here

you absolutely must look at this. so funny, and true.

@tiffyandthewall : – )
@hearkat Thanks for the link. I still have some questions about the gunk in my ears, which cannot be called “wax” by any stretch of the imagination. Your link has given me the amunition to contact my primary care doctor and ask for a referral to someone who can actually help me.

hearkat's avatar

@YARNLADY: Ears also build up flaky skin debris, and some people are prone to chronic infections so there can be pus or fungus in the canal, also. Sometimes the wax that has been pushed in by the cotton swabs acts as a barrier behind which the bacteria or fungus can breed. It can get pretty funky in that tiny dark cavern!

YARNLADY's avatar

@hearkat The medical technician at the clinic today mentioned “skin”. They showed me the debris and it looked like lots of little tiny scabs.

hearkat's avatar

@YARNLADY: Skin disorders like eczema and psoriasis also like the dark ear canal… an ear specialist should be able to prescribe appropriate treatment.

Trance24's avatar

As a kid my mom or whoever was taking care of me would swab me ears out after a shower with q-tips. So yes I still use them, even though your not supposed to.

FrancisRude's avatar

I do because it feels really good :)

However, doctor instructed me not too put anything in there. My doctor suggested Debrox for cleaning my ears, and use that saline spray to rinse it..

Jude's avatar

Yes, gently, and not all that far in.

@jmah: That’s what they all say! HaHaHa!
