What blog platform do you recommend?

Asked by sophied (106points) August 18th, 2009

I’m looking to move my blog from vox, which is really limited and not very user-friendly. What platform do you recommend? tumblr, blogger, moveable type, typepad . . . there are so many choices, I’m overwhelmed.

I’m really happy with tumblr. Tons of themes and easy to customize.

I’d go with Tumblr also, it seems easy but I’m berly getting the hang of it.

I can only speak from experience, so I’ll give you a rundown.

Tumblr: Great mix of social networking and blogging. Pegged as a “microblogging” site, everything is uber user-friendly, clean cut and easy to maintain. Though some might not like this, it’s customizable to all your needs. I’ve been using it for a little while and love it. No hassle. It’s somewhere in between Twitter and a blogging platform.

Downside? No comment section. You can get one and implement it yourself, though.

Blogger: A step up from Tumblr in terms of professionalism. Still very user-friendly, but it does take a bit more work to get themes going and what have you. The back-end is not difficult to work with and a lot of features are at your fingertips.

Wordpress: The granddaddy and my personal favorite of the three. Wordpress is a true blogging platform. The back-end is so feature packed that you’d swear you opened up another program. Seriously, it’s incredibly powerful. The only downside that WP has is that it isn’t tailored for someone that just wants to go in a share stuff with friends. Oh, no. This is built with the professional blogger in mind; no “People I Follow”, “Friends List” or anything of the sort. Widgets and codes are (obviously) available for you to use (in fact, the entire system works is customizable; don’t be fooled into thinking the thing is strict), but the true purpose of Wordpress is for those that are stepping into the realm of professional blogging.

I have three blogs, one for random writing on Blogger, All the random things I find interesting on Tumblr, and one for my stick figure drawings on Wordpress.

Blogger I’m not insane about, but does what I need it too.
Wordpress is perfect for my drawings and keeping track of how many hits it gets, and making the perfect theme. It also has a lot of space for me to save my JPEGs and such.
Tumblr is currently my favorite though. The immediate gratification of being able to reblog something or quickly blog something I find myself is fantastic. And I enjoy my tumblr folks :)

We enjoy you, too.

How do you get tumblr folks? I have a blog there, but I don’t think anyone has ever read it.

I know that some of mine are fluther people. The rest just sort of started following. Or sometimes the people I follow, follow back.

thanks for all the answers, everyone. i’m not looking for a social networking blog at all, so maybe tumblr isn’t for me. i have facebook for that, and am really looking for my blog to be just a blog. i’d like to have a few features that vox doesn’t offer
1. the ability for my friends to comment without having to create a vox account
2. the ability to let google search within my blog, so it comes up if people search for things i write about
3. free! (vox is also free)

i think i’m leaning more towards wordrpress, from what i’m hearing from you guys. it’s not a professional blog in the sense that i’m going to live off it, but it’s established with a bunch of followers.

I would definitely go with Wordpress then! Good luck!
