Should fluther award prizes to users with a lot of lurve?

Asked by jaketheripper (2779points) August 18th, 2009

I think there should be a system that rewards users like with gift cards or fluther tshirts or something like that when they reach a certain level of lurve.

No.
Lurve is not redeemable for cash or prizes. The whole tone of the site would change into something ugly.

jaketheripper's avatar

do you think it would encourage people to be more helpful? I think it would. Also I didn’t mean like a points to be redeemed type system. More like a “hey you just reached 5000 lurve so you get a free tshirt” type thing

Well, we do have an informal tradtion of congratulating people when they get to 10,000 and I know that many of us Jellies consider that a neat goal to strive for. If you take a look at some of these congratulatory threads you’ll see there is a great deal of sincere praise and appreciation for contributions to Fluther.

Little things, though, not like $5,000 gas cards or an infinite moderatorship or a car… Well, maybe one of Bendrew’s old clunkers, but nothing new or good.

marinelife's avatar

No. Lurve is too subjective and too arbitrary. Lurve is not really what Fluther is about.

casheroo's avatar

I vote yes. Only for a tshirt, or a gift card to Rita’s because I’m jonesing for it.

chyna's avatar

@AstroChuck And what prize would you suggest? Especially if a person was to hit the 20,000 mark?

AstroChuck's avatar

$1,000,000

Grisaille's avatar

No. The lurve counters are not part of a game. Lurve is not a game.

Treating it as such would be a travesty. Especially because I’d be gunnin’ to the top, making sure I won every pri—

…yeah. Gifts are a bad idea.

gailcalled's avatar

@Fred931 : Having had some experience with the Finkel family’s old clunkers, I would say that receiving one of them would be akin to a booby prize. My daughter and I borrowed one of the better heaps on a trip to visit the family ; whilst in town, the key broke off in the ignition. We had to use a small screw driver and pliers to start the car from then on

chyna's avatar

@gailcalled Ah, such sweet memories. Well, maybe this one wasn’t so sweet. Oh the hell with it: Finkel’s get new cars!

augustlan's avatar

No, no, no. Lurve is free, and has infinite value… just as it should be!

janbb's avatar

Let’s now have a rousing chorus of “All You Need is Lurve…”

eponymoushipster's avatar

wait, they don’t? I was hoping that Fluther was the PBS of the internet, giving me tote bags and DVDs of The Three Tenors every 10k.

Dang you Bendrew! Dang you to HECK!

Quagmire's avatar

Definitely not. Lurve is given out by some based upon anything OTHER then the quality of the answer.

Jeruba's avatar

No. This is not a contest. No. We give lurve, and we have parties when people reach the big milestones, and that is all. We don’t rank our members in a hierarchy and we don’t compete.

DrBill's avatar

NO, we already have a few people here (you know you are, and so do we) that give totally worthless answers a lot of times just to increase their count.

wundayatta's avatar

It’s a ridiculous idea.

If fluther wants to reward anything, it should be longevity or logorrhea. Like, a five year award, or something. Or maybe by word count—so 100,000 words on fluther, 200k, 500k, etc. This assumes that the words are of a quality to remain on fluther. Words that are moderated or removed don’t count.

drdoombot's avatar

Considering how much time I spend here, I’d love to be making money on Fluther.

However, I realize how much everything would change. It wouldn’t be fun anymore and I would probably come here less. Monetizing it would improve and ruin Fluther at the same time.

AstroChuck's avatar

Come on, everyone. With all the bank Ben and Andrew are pulling in they could afford to skip buying another one of their many yachts and share just a little of their great wealth. Perhaps if they cut back a bit on the excessive moderator pay those of use with much lurve could line our pockets as well.

aprilsimnel's avatar

Ooh, no I don’t think that’s a good idea. Being able to give a good bit of advice that helps the asker is enough for me. I’ve got enough stuff at the moment.

edit: those of us

dynamicduo's avatar

Oh boy! Are you actually proposing real life distribution for intangible magical internet points? I’m sorry but that’s simply not possible. Maybe if Bendrew made a Fluther stamp and stamped some paper they found in the dumpster behind HQ and posted a notice on the blog as to where you could come and get a stamped crappy paper yourself, it would be cost effective. But t-shirts or gift cards, no that’s just impossible to fund. Websites don’t make a lot of money, the fact that the 2 person + contractors operation can live and do what they love is really a good return of investment without a lot of spare change to be giving away :)

Radio stations can do it because they are literally drowning in merch and swag which they advertise by means of giving it away on the air. Fluther, not so much so.

OpryLeigh's avatar

I think a little reward every so often would not be a bad thing. It may encourage people to think about what they write. They aren’t going to get Lurve if they write crap!

janbb's avatar

The lurve is the reward for not writing crap.

OpryLeigh's avatar

@janbb but you can’t do anything with it and so some people may not care as much about whether or not they recieve lurve if it doesn’t amount to anything. I’m not saying that I am one of these people, I always write to the best of my ability here simply because I love answering questions but a small incentive is nice for everyone!

wundayatta's avatar

If lurve isn’t incentive enough (and who needs even that incentive?), I don’t know what people are doing here. What is the world coming to? People expect a tangible reward for everything now? I blame the parents who pay their kids to do homework!

OpryLeigh's avatar

@daloon I’m not saying it’s needed, I just think it would be fun!

tiffyandthewall's avatar

no. it would make it into too much of a contest. it’s kind of like doing a good deed just to get money. i think jellies should be intrinsically motivated to give great answers, not motivated by the promise of prizes.

i think fluther is lovely the way it is, and i don’t understand why everyone comes up with so many ideas to ‘imrpove’ it!

gailcalled's avatar

@Jeruba: I agree. It’s like giving the Mona Lisa a perm, nose stud and fake nails.

AstroChuck's avatar

You guys are no fun. I want my money.

DrBill's avatar

Oh, If only I were a flamer this would be a golden opportunity.

gailcalled's avatar

@DrBill: Just this once, go for it.

DrBill's avatar

@gailcalled

As tempting as it is, I can not lower my standards, but you can use your imagination.
