Can you recommend any twisted and dark horror movies?

I am looking for twisted, gothic, dark, scary, psychological horror movies that aren’t based on the boring jump-and-shock methods of many horror movies but more on the method of presenting you with something creepy and psychologically unnerving.
Some examples of movies which I mean are:
Silent Hill (anything related to the video games would be awesome)
Jacob’s Ladder
The Cell
The Orphanage
Saw (the settings)
Thanks for your time.

The Phonebooth might interest you.
@chyna I am looking for the horror genre primarily, not psychological movies in general.
If anyone has played the Silent Hill series they will know automatically what I am looking for.
I personally go to Blockbuster and rent all the horror movies I haven’t seen. Some are winners, some are stinkers.
Mulholland Drive
Lost Highway
Eraserhead
Inland Empire
pretty much any David Lynch movie
Funny Games, it’s German, it is truely messed up, especially when you think the boy is going to escape, wrong, super wrong, but fucking brilliant. The Martyrs, another good one, that shit’s totally fucked. The Evil Dead, and his new one, but that’s kinda silly. Oh, Driving Miss Daisy
Audition. One of the creepiest movies I’ve ever seen.
@bumwithablackberry Is it the same Funny Games that came out not long ago with Naomi Watts and Tim Roth? If so that move was truly disturbing.
The pit and the Pendulum with Vincent Price, okay sounds corny but if you watch and pay attention, you will become facinated with horror rather than just gore. And for the macabre, Trainspotting
I haven’t personally seen it but everyone says A Clockwork Orange is twisted. I don’t know if thats the kind of movie your looking for but its worth a try.
@bumwithablackberry Oh okay I never realized it was a remake. Thanks for the link. I might just have to watch the original now.
Thanks for the recommendations. Am going to give Funny Games a try and some of the others :). Have already seen Clockwork Orange and TPATP
Dead Ringers
Freaks
Silence of the Lambs
Basket Case
@bumwithablackberry I actually liked the one that came out in 1997 more than the original. here’s a review
if everyone on here hasn’t seen it, I highly recommend it.
Cape Fear is also an older classic with Robert DeNiro as it’s villain .
I’m actually really surprised no one’s mentioned American Psycho yet.
Se7en, with Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman is also insane, one of the better films of the 90s.
@ABoyNamedBoobs03 I had forgotten about Se7en and Cape Fear. Both excellent movies. I haven’t seen them in quite a while, so what was fantastic in the 90’s might seem cheesy now.
However, I do recommed both also.
@ABoyNamedBoobs03 Excellent choice on Se7en. And I thought the Funny games that came out in 97’ was the original and the 07’ was the remake. Now I’m just confused. :)
Edit: thats supposed to be a frowny face :( <———-much better!
Also! before I forget! Requiem For a Dream is about as dark as you can get as well… it’s really graphic though, just a warning
and to Stay with Dan Aronofsky, Pi is an oldie but a goodie too.
@sjmc1989 oops, yeah supposed to be 07, typo, thanks for the heads up :).
@ABoyNamedBoobs03 Oh okay and good choice again with Requiem For a Dream. I like your taste. :P
@sjmc1989 oh and a good one that just came out by Micheal Heneke (did the original funny games) The White Ribbon was pretty cool.
lol ok I’m done, got a little carried away there.
@ABoyNamedBoobs03 No no I love horror movies but never can find one thats actually worth time to sit and watch. Either it’s been done before or acting is terrible. So if you have any suggestions I’m all ears.
I saw “The Descent” the other day, it’s low budget but it’s a believable concept and for the last ¾ths of the movie you get all tensed up and wide eyed, looking for the ‘bad guys’, so to speak.
Oh yeah and I’m pretty sure I’ve seen The Descent, but keep them coming
Feed—Extremely disturbing and gross (but not overtly).
Martyrs (French)—It still haunts me.
Learning Curve is a decent psychological horror flick, and most of it happens in broad daylight, which makes it even scarier.
If you want some gore “The Machine Girl” or “The Wizard of Gore” might interest you.
[REC] is a good horror, but it’s in Spanish.
“Ring” is a great Japanese horror along with most movies directly based off of the novels of Kôji Suzuki.
Double Feature: House of 1,000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects.
As @standardtoaster said, I think Eraserhead was the most disturbing movie I have ever seen. It isn’t specifically a horror film, but it is truly creepy.
I recommend the French film Martyrs. You won’t know what the hell is going on till the last few minutes, and when you get there, you don’t want to be there anymore.
Has anyone mentioned Dark City ? Great movie. The less you know, the better.
@filmfann: That’s on my Netflix queue. And after the two horror film questions in the past couple of days, now I’m in the mood for some horror I haven’t seen yet. I think I’ll move it up in the list! :D
Drag Me to Hell “I think your nose is bleeding” haha
@bumwithablackberry—I hate that movie. It was a waste of my time and money. Ugh! It was so disgustiing…..stupid old lady!—
It’s just my opinion :)
Cannibal Holocaust. I’ve never seen it, but I’ve heard it’s definitely not for the faint of heart (or those who love animals). In fact, I’ve also heard it’s down right disturbing.
From my own personal experience, I thought the movies, ‘The Decent’ and ‘High Tension’ were pretty good.
You know Session 9? Apparently the folks behind Silent Hill were very inspired by it and had a tribute bit in Silent Hill 3 dedicated towards the movie. Watched it, thought it was fairly shit, but hey.
@Sanyore I adore Session 9. I just went to visit the place where it was filmed a couple of weeks ago, and my copy of the DVD arrived in the mail today. :D
Session 9 was beyond dull and Cannibal Holocaust was a pointless film
DUDE
Cannibal Holocaust was the best film I ever saw in my LIFE. Who needs a plot when you have mindless killings and gore?
I thought Se7en was overrated. It was all right, but not the best.
Maniac is also another good film
I remember going to see Se7en at the cinema with a friend and when we left we were saying “It was a good film but you would have to be a bit sick to want to watch it again”. We went to the cinema again the next night with some more friends to watch it.
And AiROW ruioned the ending for me…
@teh_kvlt_liberal I’ve got it on DVD and I’m sure there is an alternate ending, but I can’t remember it.
How many of you have seen the German version of Funny Games, or Martyrs?
@bumwithablackberry: I’ve seen both films. Funny Games struck me as pointless. it needed one extra element (or maybe to lack one element that it did have), so it did not quite gel. though I liked the bit with the remote (which I have a feeling a lot of people hated). Martyrs, OTOH blew me away.
I think Paranormal Activity is a good example of this type of movie. The hand held element certainly added to the mystique and also added another darker layer to the film.
Also worth mentioning are Rod Serling’s ‘Night Gallery’, David Cronenberg’s ‘Videodrome’ and ‘Silence of the Lambs’.
Just about anything that has come out of Korea. Bloody twisted, the lot of them.
