Too much bleeding for a period, after giving birth six months ago?

Asked by DrasticDreamer (23996points) August 21st, 2009

My best friend had a baby almost six months ago. She started what she thought was her period two weeks ago, but she’s been bleeding heavily since then. She soaks through Super-Plus tampons in about two hours. She only has random, mild cramping. She’s also been breastfeeding the entire time, if that matters.

So, does anyone know if this is normal? I already suggested that she go to the doctor’s, but she’s hesitant because she doesn’t have insurance. She feels like it’d be a waste of money if all they say is that it’s normal and she has nothing to worry about.

I know most Flutherers don’t like giving medical advice, but, please share stories if you know anyone who has gone through something similar. Thanks!

I had my second about 6 months ago and was breastfeeding for about 5 months and my periods are back, have been for a while, and are VERY heavy…I figure that’s my body restructuring after birth…I have heard that pregnancy can result in much heavier periods

@Simone_De_Beauvoir When you have them, how long do they last? ‘Cause she’s been bleeding for the entire two-week period. Are your periods similar in length?

@DrasticDreamer Oh no, 7 days…she can try to find a local health clinic…sliding scale…or go to the emergency room

@Simone_De_Beauvoir Yeah, I keep telling her she should go. But she really doesn’t want to because of the lack of insurance. She keeps saying that because there isn’t any pain, she thinks it probably isn’t serious. I’m trying to convince her that that isn’t necessarily the case.

Blood loss is serious. In fact it is life threatening. She needs to go to the ER. Would she rather be solvent or dead?

DrasticDreamer's avatar

@pdworkin Exactly. I don’t know how to convince her.

Take her.

Who delivered her baby? She should call that practice.

DrasticDreamer's avatar

@pdworkin I would, but I don’t have a car. :(

@PandoraBoxx Just a doctor at the hospital. Maybe she can call, I’ll find out. That would be a good idea.

@DrasticDreamer she can say she has pain, so what? the ER will still take her

The first one after having a baby, especially if nursing has delayed it will be extra heavy.
Unless she is in pain or has other symptoms (light headed, dizy, faints when standing, severe pain) she should be ok. If it lasts more than 10 days she may want to get it checked out.

She may want to take a vitamin with iron.

Has she done a home pregnancy test? What kind of contraception is she using? Two weeks of period level bleeding is outside the range of normal.

I’ve always been a light period kinda gal, even after I gave birth.
I did have severe blood loss after an abortion, I bled fo 15 weeks off and on, but more on than anything. I had to start taking iron supplements, and get my iron checked because they feared I’d become anemic. I did not have health insurance, so I was only seeing the staff at Planned Parenthood. I guess if they thought it was serious, they would have sent me to the hospital.
Is there any doctor she can call, does she have health insurance?
To me, two weeks doesn’t sounds so bad…especially if this is her first post partum period.

Hospitals can not force you to pay your bill all at one time. You can set up payment plans to pay as little as 10.00 a month. If she can’t afford that, they will just write it off as a bad debt after a few months of trying to collect from her. I hope she decides to go to the ER, because it doesn’t sound normal to me, but I am not a doctor, just an auditor that audits hospitals. :)

@Chyna, that’s assuming her credit is already screwed up. They can haunt her with negative info on her credit report for 7 to 10 years.

chyna's avatar

@judi Not if she pays a minimum each month.

Judi's avatar

That could be true. It’s been 20 years since I’ve been through that mess

If she has little to no cramping and usually has cramping I would make sure she is not pregnant. Blood without cramps can be an ectopic, does she have any pain on her sides?

Surely it could be simply crazy hormones, but if it goes on for more than a couple of days that heavy I would go to the doctor.

I just noticed this was asked 6 days ago, what happened? Did it lighten up?

DrasticDreamer's avatar

No, she’s still bleeding. She’s going to the doctor’s next Wednesday. (About time!)

Wednesday! Tell her to take some iron.

My coworker aged 35 just has a total abdominal hysterectomy last Thursday due to unusually heavy bleeding for almost two years following the birth of her second son. She had to wear pads, underwear, and a pair of shorts under her clothes – it was that bad. She begged her doctor to do a hysterectomy for a year to no avail. She finally went to another doctor (also no insurance, but I think Medicaid picked up something on her) who did the hysterectomy due to abnormal scar tissue which was contributing to the bleeding. Good luck to your friend.
