Has anyone tried the Dr. Glickman Cleanse/Lemonade diet?

Asked by gailcalled (54647points) December 13th, 2006
It's a Draconian cleanse...1 qt. of salt water glugged in AM, 6-8 8oz glasses of spring water w. 2 t. organic lemon juice, 2 t organic maple syrup, and a dash of cayenne pepper. No vits. or supps. A laxative tea before bedtime. Article in NYT today..10 days is suggested. All pro nutritionists hate it. Users love it.

A bunch of people I work with have tried it - they all survived :) Though some lasted longer on it than others...

What were the most days? How did everyone feel? Would anyone try it again? Were they scrupulous in following directions?

Lily, what did you think? And how long?

I tried the diet, also known as Master Cleanse, last spring. It went pretty well, but I was not using the laxatives. That caused some complications so I went stopped on my 4th day. Other than that I really enjoyed the experience. The first two days are the hardest, just be sure to have plenty to lemonade!

Why did you skip laxatives? You mean both the senna tea and the qt of salt water in AM? And if you had 2 hard days and stopped on day 4, that leaves one good day, if I understand you.

I stopped the Master Cleanse after five days because I was having major stomach pains. Didn't feel like hunger pains, just an upset stomach..so my nutrionist recommended I stop. I dont think it's necessarily very beneficial. I think a better (and less intense) way to cleanse daily is just adding squeezing lemon (or lime if you prefer) into your water in the morning, this also will cleanse just more gently.

But I also did not try the laxtive tea at night

One of my nephew's (Ben's cousin) did it for the whole 10 days. I haven't gotten the details, such as how one weans oneself back to food, but apparently he was enthusiastic. I, too, tried the lax. tea and salt water and had major cramping..All nutritionists hate the cleanse. Oprah and the celebs. love it. Article in NYT on 12/10 about it. Also the issue of stopping vits., nutritional supps and meds for the duration..

I also did the master cleanse, and I hated it.

I read a lot about it before I tried it, and most of the proponents' arguments seemed dubious. The feelings of "euphoria" people site is more likely due to the rise in glucose levels in your blood as your body hastily tries to cope with starvation.

The digestive system is one of the most sensitive in the body -- totally changing all the flora in your intestinal tract by forcing salt-water and drinking laxatives (becuase you don't have any fiber to induce bowel movements naturally) seems about as good and useful an idea as a colonic -- not very.

I'm not philisophically against fasting , but i think a more productive way of cleansing your system is to eat less processed foods, and following something similar to imagine401's comment.

It sounds like a dangerous diet to me. Messing around with your digestive system is a bad idea. This sounds like the sort of patent medicine that Victorians would mess up their bodies with. Perhaps you could try a galvanic belt at the same time.

I'm actually shocked that intelligent people try things like this! If you want to do something good for your body...follow the Glycemic Index diet...eat foods with a low Glycemic Index and you will be doing something healthy for your body. That will pumping up high fiber foods sounds so much healthier....

I will see my nephew today and will ask him about his experiences. I lost a lot of weight the hard way; 1 lb/per week. Easy version; 4 green veggies, 1 yellow, 1 red, 1 orange daily (1/2 c. servings) no white food; 67 grains protein (organic meat, nuts and free-range chicken) a few complex carbs, fruit rather than juice (except for carrot juice) no-fat dairy, only cottage or farmer's cheese permitted. Kept a daily food diary, took some supps and saw a nutritionist once a week.

Throw in exercise; calories in < calories out and voila...common sense. Apple better than fudge; kale better than ice berg...

I agree with hossman and andrew. It sounds dangerous and apart from being a good colonic (ie give the colon a break) I don’t think 10 days of doing this will do much good except make one lose weight drastically – which they will probably put all back on after the diet.

It’s not even nutritionally sound, in my opinion not a doctor
