How do you feel about pageants?

Asked by photographcrash (809points) August 23rd, 2009

Sitting here watching Miss Universe got me thinking.. are pageants really a way for women to showcase their abilities/intelligence and make a difference? Or is it just another horribly obvious parade of vain airheaded women invented just so the general public can oogle them?

The latter. I don’t remember ever reading about the differences any of these pageant winners make. The public’s/everyone’s interest in them end’s at the crown/tiara toy, or that’s the impression I’ve always got.

It has nothing to do with talent or intelligence. That was thrown in as an afterthought so it would make the pageant look “better”.

It’s all for beauty. I don’t get why they bother with talents or intelligence in the competitions. You don’t see Football players show off their singing skills before a big game.

Also, this is relevant.

@Sarcasm loved that when I saw it on TV. and for the record, I only watched Miss U tonight to see if heidi montag’s performance was going to be dreadful. It was everything I imagined, and more.. oh so much more.

I’d answer this post but I’m kind of bummed…

I thought you said pigeons, not pageants, for some reason, as I was getting excited because I realized I had never really evaluated my feelings on pigeons before, and was eager to share…

I realize my prior post seems a little weird… I think a lot, about really random subjects…

I like the pretty dresses and the fab costumes at the beginning. That’s what its all about for me. I don’t make a point to watch pageants, but if they’re on and nothing else is, I’ll sit down and watch.

For the record, I think Miss Kosovo’s translator just screwed her over. Oops.

@ABoyNamedBoobs03 haha, well, what are your thoughts on pigeons then?

photographcrash's avatar

@avvooooooo I think she was distracted by the massive beehive atop her head..

it’s just not the same…

LOL! That was the funniest shit! Venezuela won and the previous Miss Universe was also from Venezuela. They were jumping up and down and going in circles together, freaking out, and then they put the crown on her and it fell off… Will be up on YouTube shortly! Lol!

After watching this video I’ve lost all hope in beauty pageants. It just shows the world that if you have a pretty face, you don’t need to be smart.

They look fun to me.

@kheredia Try the Miss California anti-gay statement. Bet she has trouble getting good hair, makeup, stylists, etc. now!

Facade's avatar

@avvooooooo I think it’s sad that she is being ridiculed for expressing her thoughts.

About the Miss California thing.. I think she could have answered the question in a less offensive way and still make her point. She really did blow it. Gay marriage is a touchy subject and you have to know how to answer properly otherwise, you shit all over yourself and she sooo did.

avvooooooo's avatar

@kheredia Perez Hilton, in his rant just after the pageant ended, provided an example of a perfectly acceptable way to answer that question without offending anyone.

@Facade When you’re representing an organization, and especially a state with as many gay people as California, its important to learn how to express yourself in a way that doesn’t offend anyone. Its not just about her thoughts, it was the job she was supposed to be doing and the “job interview” that she was on when she chose to make a statement rather than to do her job.

Here is the video of the jumping and the crown falling and the silliness that I found soooooo funny!

The same way I feel about competitive child sports, horse shows, and yacht clubs.

Considering how easy it is to find porn on the internet, I’m surprised people still bother to watch this. Pageants may be one of the most pointless things people participate in, ever. Women artificially beautify themselves for what? A title with little importance and influence?

Vanity is so not attractive.

None of the women I watched tonight in the pageant seemed uniquely intelligent, just very beautiful. I think they have their place though… those women don’t wake up looking like that, they work hard at it. Extreme beauty is a strength just like anything else. It’s just an often envied one that people criticize because they’re jealous, and that’s how some people react to jealousy.

For children, I think pageants are fine as long as it’s for fun and not something the mother pushes on the child. When it stops being fun and starts stressing the child or hurting them if they don’t win, it is time to find a new hobby.

It’s just another form of modelling to me which I don’t have a problem with, I like looking at beautiful female models. I only have an issue with it if kids are pushed into it.
