Replacing batttery for IBM ThinkPad?

Asked by answerjill (6203points) August 24th, 2009

Hi. I need to replace the battery for my IBM ThinkPad. It is an older computer, an R51. Any advice on best places to purchase new batteries—and what type to look for? Thanks!

Get a battery for a MacBook instead.

It won’t work with your ThinkPad so you’ll have to get a MacBook.

This is no bad thing.

@Noel_S_Leitmotiv , what kind of answer is that? Do you think you’re helping anybody out here?

@answerjill, you can just google “IBM Thinkpad R51 Battery” and come up with several hits.

Here is one for around $40. I’ve seen them over $100 at other places.

@IchtheosaurusRex: Yes actually.

Ichthe, yeah, I know that I can google it, thanks. Sometimes, you want a human to interpret things for you, especially if you don’t know much about computers, like me. Thanks for the suggestions!

@answerjill , the problem with notebook batteries is that every time a computer maker comes out with a new model or line, they come up with a new battery design instead of conforming to a standard form factor and building a computer around it. In some instances, it makes sense to do this, but usually it does not. We have the same problem with cell phones, PDAs, and other devices that use rechargeable batteries.

When you need a battery for an older computer, you have to get it from someone who makes them after the original model run, or from the manufacturer itself. But a lithium ion battery will start dying the moment it comes off the line, so you can end up with a shrink-wrapped battery that’s got ⅓ the capacity it should have. I wish I had a better solution for you, but there isn’t one.
