Why does not having sheets on my bed make me a lowlife?

Asked by live_rose (1223points) August 24th, 2009

I personally don’t like the feeling of sheets on my bed. My father told me I had to put sheets on it because only people who live under 3rd world circumstances . . .and lowlifes sleep on beds without sheets. What about a sheet less bed is lowlife and embarrassing? Why are sheets important to have on a neat bed?

Ummm, you can’t throw a mattress in the washing machine . . . so the general role of sheets is to be the thing that catches body soils and are small enough to fit in the washer . . .

because that’s the preferred bedding of the North American Heroin Addict, in it’s natural environment?

If I had to speak from experience, the only people I ever knew without sheets were low life’s and drug addicts and people who slept in other people’s basements. It’s dirty.

I agree with everyone’s answers.

But I’m wondering… have you tried different sheets? High thread count or satin or anything? Different sheets feel different.

Its the the hygienic thing to do.

I hate the feeling of laying on just a mattress..yuck! Yeah, maybe try different types of sheets.
I don’t think it makes you a lowlife, but it’s very strange.

Also, you may be part of the reason mattresses cannot ever be donated. lol

It’s a matter of being clean. If you sleep on a mattress with out any sheets, how are you going to clean the mattress? And they’re not exactly cheap to replace you know.

sheets just seem slippery and slidey to me. And to add to my heroin addict look. I like to sleep in my clothes that feels comfortable to me. I know it must seem unhygienic but I did invest in a mattress cleaning product because of my sleeping arrangement.

asmonet's avatar

It’s not clean, plain and simple.
As for your father comparing it to certain groups behavior rather than simply explaining why it’s done is rather misguided in my opinion.

It is a matter of cleanliness.

If the sheets bother you, go to a fabric store and see if there are any fabrics that you would like on your bed. You might find a cotton, a synthetic or maybe a plush that you would enjoy.

Mmmmm, silk.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@live_rose at least the belt on your arm doesn’t get lost in the sheets when it goes loose.

live_rose's avatar

@eponymoushipster see I’m the smartest dirty addict on the block

jamielynn2328's avatar

You could use flannel sheets. They are not slippery or slidey at all.

sigh I put some sheets on my bed

Good dirty girl. ;)

Get jersey sheets. They feel like a super comfy stretchy cotton tshirt.

i think im gonna go take a nap now

@uberbatman That’s all my husband likes on the best as well. My mother got us new different sheets and we felt we were slipping and sliding on them at first…but they are so silky soft!

eponymoushipster's avatar

@uberbatman have you seen the new jersey sheets at American Apparel? dude…nice.

marinelife's avatar

Try using flannel sheets. They are in no way slippy or slidy.

avvooooooo's avatar

I use jersey sheets. They’re just like sleeping in your tshirt, but all over.

eponymoushipster's avatar

i want those American Apparel jersey sheets, but $56? they better come with the quasi-heroin chic AA model…

Sarcasm's avatar

My bed has a pair of jersey sheets and a pair of standard sheets, Jersey sheets being my “primary”. When it’s time to wash them, I do it at the start of the day so they’re done before the time I have to go to bed. Standard sheets are just terrible in comparison.

augustlan's avatar

I always preferred jersey (like a t-shirt) or flannel, but I now have microfleece sheets! They. Are. Awesome.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@augustlan i have a microfleece blanket. It is the MOST COMFORTABLE THING EVER. :)

Judi's avatar

At least use a matress pad. You could wash that.

Do you wear underwear? Do you change your clothes—and wash them? Do you brush your teeth? Do you wash your hands after you go to the bathroom? Do your friends do any of these things?

Not only is it more hygienic, it is also the last line of defense between you and an army of House dust mite!

Can you fit a mattress into your washer? Of course you can’t. When you sleep, you sweat and drool and body oils rub into the mattress. We put sheets on so that they absorb this and we can wash them regularly and thus clean the mattress. By not using sheets, you are making your mattress dirtier and dirtier and you have no way of cleaning it at all. This encourages bacteria to exist. You will stink, your mattress will stink. Thus you are acting like a lowlife. It is the same reason to wear underwear – it protects your main article of clothing, it will catch the sweat and bacteria that form during the day.

Finally we get to the point, it;s not about the sheets. it’s about cleanliness. As we sleep we deposit detritus. If you don;t cover the bed it’s like putting on the szme shirt every day without washing it. It doesn’t matter if you bath daily, you still shed body oils and skin cells. You don’t have to use sheets per say but you have to lay a washable layer between your body and the mattress, and you have to wash bedclothes regularly. This is why most people use sheets, they are easier to clean than blankets, comforters or animal skins. If you don’t wash what you sleep on directly at least once a week that detritus starts to break down and things get pretty funky..
