Should fluther notify you when someone is referring to you?

We can pm to someone and they will receive a message on their profile, we can reference to a user in a thread to help us understand the flow and context of the question better. I (think I) completely understand the difference and maybe even the motivation behind this choice, however if someone refers to me in a question I kind of feel obligated to respond.
Maybe this was overlooked/postponed, maybe it was considered a bad idea, but what about some kind of (subtle, non intrusive) notification to feed my narcissistic and human decency needs? Do you think this is a bad idea in general or would you welcome it? Extra lurve for suggestions on how to notify without cluttering your profile more.
I ask because I just randomly visited a 2 week old topic. To my surprise I found the last quip(?) to refer to me (@markyy) and feel a little bad that I did not respond.

I got your question through an IM :p I think it would work if Fluther were to send you an instant message telling you.
Just an idea, not much thought put into it :p
I would really like it if notifications were sent out when someone later referred to me, or directed a question towards me. Because sometimes I stop following a question wants it becomes waaay too involved and there are too many lengthy responses that I don’t feel like reading.
I must sound lazy now…haha
Absolutely they should. Great idea, Markyy.
Sure. but i think every time someone gets self-righteous, a hand should come out and smack them, too.
Definitely. It’s implemented in a few forums and hella helpful. Especially in heated oneupmanships.
on an entirely unrelated note, whoever it is that went through all my posts and gave me lurve, uh, thanks
I completely agree with you @markyy. When someone refers to me I feel i need to acknowledge them. I think they could couple it with your new activity, and have a second section, probably “Personal References” and you could go to where you were mentioned, and there could also be a history feature, where if there was an interesting reference to you, you could go back and see it. It would also be good if showed a list of who made references to you, and the number of times, and you click the number to take you to a page that had the references and questions they were listed on. Tell me what you think.
I
Think
It’s
PUNKING BRILLIANT
I’d really like it if that were possible because, like you, I like to respond (if it’s relevant to do so) if someone @‘s me!
This is a great suggestion.
I thought someone had indicated something like this with the newest Flutherbot update, and I’ve been waiting for it to happen.
I think it would be nice to be notified if your name is mentioned even in a thread you have not participated in as yet. Of course that is dependent upon the person spelling your name properly! I once had my name in the actual heading of a question, but the asker misspelled my name, and didn’t use tags, so I didn’t get the question until I happened upon it some time later.
ah crap
wants = once (from my earlier post)
past the editing time slot…*sigh
Nice thought of you. That’s a great idea.
i was JUST thinking this same thing the other day!
ya. that would be cool (or maybe that would just be annoying. idk)
I think that would be great.
Usually my ears get really hot when I’m being talked about but I’d love to be notified anyway.
Yes, if the reference is part of a question/comment the user isn’t involved in yet. Good idea!
@Zen haha yeah, I don’t know what I was thinking…sometimes my hands just type what they want sometimes! lurve!
I would love this feature. :)
I recently joined BrightKite, and they do notify you of “Mentions”
what if the “community feed” was tailored to the logged in user – so you only saw people in your fluther in it, and, along with that, any mentions of you in other threads?
@eponymoushipster: don’t see the community feed from my iPhone (although it does know your name); so I’d want to access “Mentions” from my Alerts page.
@hearkat ah yes, i forgot you mostly fluther on the iphone. good point.
@eponymoushipster: There are several of us who do… and access is limited. I can’t fort Questions by ‘My Fluther’, ‘Active’, or ‘Orphans’. There’s no list or even a link to sibling Questions, either. :-(
Surely a good solution would be to make the community feed available on the iPhone.
@richardhenry: I find the Community Feed an extraneous feature. I’d much rather have sorting options for browsing Questions, and ‘Mentions’ listed under “Stuff for You”.
Sounds like a great idea but I have no idea how difficult it would be to program it. Would it apply only to the @ – prefixed references or to all? Some people are referred to by shortened forms of there screen names or by names formerly used. That could get complex, as we would have to select a function with several options and combinations.
