I'm in NY. Am I covered by COBRA if I voluntarily quit my job?

Asked by serenityNOW (3643points) August 25th, 2009

My work conditions have been rapidly deteriorating. If I quit will I have the chance to move over to Cobra and keep my HMO, or is Cobra only for those who’ve been terminated? I can’t seem to find much info but I’m really quite scared; I have some complicated medical issues, but my work conditions are getting unbearable. Even if someone could point me in the right direction; my Googles didn’t come up with much.

I think it’s only for termination (that’s how I was covered), but don’t take my word for it.

Edit: Not just termination, but I think it’s only for involuntary events that stop you from working.

Read this.

Edited to add: Read this. Much better!

“Qualifying Events for Employees:

*

Voluntary or involuntary termination of employment for reasons other than gross misconduct
*

Reduction in the number of hours of employment ”

Edited again to add: But don’t trust me! I’m a random person on the internet. Call COBRA and ASK. The program has to have a number you can dial somewhere. Like this one: 1.866.444.3272 to speak to a Benefits Advisor

I quit my job and in the exit interview the HR person discussed enrolling in COBRA. But it was crazy expensive. Like 400 per month. And I was a healthy 22 year old male that never used the insurance while I had it.

That was in Oregon.

edit :: my reason for leaving was that I was moving out of state.

I was offered COBRA upon leaving both of the last two places I worked. They were voluntary terminations. I’ll have the option again in a few weeks.

What you don’t get when you quit is the new 65% federal subsidy of your COBRA premiums.

Yes, it is very expensive, but it is nothing next to the cost of a serious hospitalization. You don’t take it if you have another option; but if you haven’t, it can save your hide.
