A Czech writer used the term robot in 1920 in one of his plays.
Not sure if it’s the first, but Leonardo Da Vinci’s robot warrior was designed (and built?) around 1495. It’s also said that Da Vinci was commissioned in 1515 to build a mechanical lion which could “walk forward, then open its chest to reveal a cluster of lilies.”
Then there’s Al-Jazari (1136–1206) who invented all kinds of automata, including a musical robot band, drink serving waitress, and a peacock fountain with automated servants.
Great question!
I believe it was Karel Capek who first invented the term robot in what we would now call a science fiction story.
FWIW, robot is one of three English words to originate in Czech. The other two are dollar and pistol.
Hard to say. Leonardo Da Vinci does have the first respected “robot” plans; but even in ancient Egypt and really ancient Greece had little automated things they put in their temples.
