Oppression/Repression??

how would you characterize the linguistic difference between oppression and repression?

In the common parlance, oppression is done by an external authority and repression is done by your own brain. The results may feel alike...and many dictionaries have similar definitions...but I would say,"Iran has an oppresssive gov't" and "I behave in repressed manner, due to genes, childhood, barometric pressure, whatever."
