I need to remove a faucet head but It is so stuck I can't get it off?

Asked by grntwlkr (179points) August 26th, 2009

I need to replace a rubber washer in my outdoor faucet, but the faucet is so stuck I can not remove it, I can’t remove the faucet head itself, and I can’t remove the packing nut. When I use my adjustable wrench it just bends the metal of the nut completely and rounds the edges. I also tried two wrenches. The nuts have been painted over too. How do I get them off!

I’d hit it with a hammer, but I’m not very good with tools and especially power tools.

I heard a blow torch might work, or a nut splitter if it is gone for good, has anyone ever used a nut splitter?

Time to call a plumber.

some tricks are to pipe some propane gas from a BBQ tank, etc onto the fitting to “freeze” it, then warm it with a BBQ lighter or like [First turn off the propane and move the tank away!!!!]. Caution is that you may twist the pipe in the wall, leading to a major leak. A nut splitter could work, but it will likely ruin the fitting. you can get a splitter at a hardware or automotive parts store. Maybe a plumber? Good luck.

Stop. Forget the gas. Forget buying any more tools. Consider the lower cost of getting some help to limit any expensive repairs, including the E.R. visit.
Plumbing repairs can get expensive if you make any mistakes.
If you decide to continue make sure you know where the main water shut off is just in case water was to start leaking out of a broken pipe.
Good luck be safe no gas no flame.

Lock wrenches are great for when you strip a bolt or nut.
