There is a specific knitted blanket called an afghan. Where did it get that name?

That’s something I’ve wondered about myself. For that matter, why is that stool-like chair accessory called an ottoman?

Aren’t afghans actually crocheted? Still, it is strange!
According to online etymology, it started not as a blanket, but as an Afghan shawl. Shawls are generally knitted.
