Is it pointless for me to pursue a world record in the game Centipede?

Long story short, I’m very good at the 1980 arcade game Centipede. Good enough that I believe, with more practice and time, I could have a world record.
On the one hand, I enjoy playing the game for fun, so I think If I was to play it with the intention of setting a record, it might loose some of it’s appeal to me.
On the other hand, how many people can really say they are among the best in the world at something? Do you think its worth it to try for this reason alone?

No way, man. That will make you so much smarter.
go for it. if it aint been done yet, then you are da man! funny how stuff like this can actually make the news. you just need good public relations.
Before we go any further. . .can I tell people I know you?
@Blondesjon If you think a name drop can get you to the front of the line at the club, I say go for it.
It is indeed pointless.
But who am I to try to stop you. You asked. I answered
@hookecho . . .If you think playing Centipede without a track ball is Centipede, well, you’ve got another thing comin’.
Is it pointless? definitely. Is it still fucking awesome? absolutely!
centipede is hard once you get up there, definitely addicting though.
@Blondesjon I agree. My second highest score ever was with a trackball (original arcade machine).
Steve Wiebe did that with Donkey Kong. Why not you with Centipede?
Go for it if you think you could do it.
I posted a question a few days ago that no one really responded to that relates to your inquiry. Here. The website mentioned is very entertaining, I thought. You could start there, It may not be the ultimate world record you may be striving for, but it’s a start. You could do something like “Highest Centipede score while wearing a pirate hat”. But in any case, if pursuing this record is something that will have some sort of emotional benefit to you, then no, it is not pointless.

I am 46 years old today, and my wrists hurt.
If it’s the game I think you mean, I didn’t like it much so for me that record would seem pointless.
However, Guiness is filled with pointless records. Go beyond “tallest ever man” and “fattest ever girl under 12” and you get into things like “guy who managed to make the most phonecalls in a day” or “largest collection of toothpicks”. I’m sure I could do some record in Elite II, such as “longest running savegame”. All pointless, and the only reason for doing them is to get into the book itself (as opposed to beating Bolt’s new record in the 100m dash and becoming world famous).
One thing you should check before going for the actual world record is whether Guiness will actually accept it, if there’s such a category. I wanted to be “world’s most prolific songwriter” (had written 700 songs by the time I was 21) but they closed down the category. Makes sense, because anyone can come up with huge quantities of crap songs (no, I’ll avoid giving examples here), it’s the quality that matters. Which is why they still have a “most #1 hits” category for example.
If you like arcade games…
And you like tripping balls…
I’d also recommend downloading Spheres Of Chaos. It becomes ridiculously challenging.
Also, don’t do acid before playing, and keep it far away from people with epilepsy.
