Why do I feel like fainting after taking some tylenol?

Asked by Tink (8673points) August 29th, 2009 from iPhone

I took some a little while ago to stop the pain of a sprained ankle. And right now I was laying down and when I stood up my head started hurting and I fell back. Was it the medecine that might have had expired? The heat? What do I take now? I don’t think it’s necessary to go to the doctor, though.

It thins your blood.
Actually not certain that tylenol does necessarily, though many products of this sort do.

So what now?

You must open the seven gates of Hell!

@Tink1113 Take things slow. Might be heat too. Drink lots of water.

Tink's avatar

@The_Compassionate_Heretic It’s about 108 degrees here, I should stay hydrated. Should I take a nap?

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

@Tink1113 Staying hydrated is the thing to do. On days like this, you should always have water close and drink water constantly, especially after feeling light headed.

I am not a doctor. But I have skateboarded for over 20 years and have had tons of sprained ankles. Advil helps more than Tylenol. Just stay off it (the ankle). When it feels good again stay off it for another week.

It is very easy to think it is fine and screw it up doing the simplest thing. You might want to get a brace. They are cheap and you can get them in a lot of places.

Tink's avatar

@johnpowell Yeah, It was the skateboards fault, you know me so well. :) Advil? I’ll ask for some. So no more skating? Damn!

I might get a brace. Thanks.

When you lie down, your blood pressure can drop. This can be exacerbated by dehydration. Drink something with electrolytes, like juice, not just water.

I assume you already know this, but don’t take the advil until the tylenol has left your system (consult the label, but most likely around 4 hours). They use the same receptors.

Oh god.. Stay off the skate for a few weeks. I know it sucks but you have to do it.

Tink's avatar

@La_chica_gomela Drinking juce right now :)
Ok I’ll take it later. Thanks.
@johnpowell Well dammit! There goes my easy transportation! But I’ll try.

I know someone who is allergic to Tylenol. Not many people have a reaction but she is one of them. She takes Advil or ibuprophen instead.

@Tink1113: Being a minor, you should talk to your mom or dad. Now.

Tink's avatar

@Lupin Im not sure i’m allergic to it, I’ve taken it before.

@gailcalled I told my mom how I felt after taking it, and she said it must have also been the heat. I always feel weak when I am in the sun for a long time.

gailcalled's avatar

Aha. You didn’t tell us about lying in the sun. That can bring on light-headedness, usually a sign of being in the sun for too long. Heat prostration.
Sunstroke.

Tink's avatar

I wasn’t laying in the sun, I was just exposed to it for a long time. I have never gotten a heat stroke before, but my sister does. It might run in the family.

@La_chica_gomela: I have had physicians tell me that ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) is a different class of analgesic that acetaminophen (Tylenol), and that they can be taken simultaneously.

@The_Compassionate_Heretic: Aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen can thin the blood and irritate the stomach. Acetaminophen is known to damage the liver.

@Tink1113: You definitely need to hydrate!! Not only because of the heat; but also to help your ankle heal, and because you are an active, growing young person. If you were laying down with the ankle elevated (as you should be) the blood will be pooling in the lowest point of your body, then when you stand up, the cardiovascular system has to adjust your blood pressure to get it up to your brain.

Tink's avatar

@hearkat You are a doctor right? So I should drink water and stuff with electrolytes?

hearkat's avatar

@Tink1113: No, I’m not a Doctor. I am an Audiologist, which specializes in the function of the ears. But that includes the inner ear, which regulates our equilibrium.

The main thing about choosing beverages for adequate hydration is to avoid caffeine (and for those who are older, alcohol) which acts as a diuretic and causes our body to lose hydration. Electrolytes are beneficial if you have been sweating a lot, or have digestive problems that prevent you from absorbing the nutrients from foods. But if you are eating normally, and haven’t been doing strenuous activity, they shouldn’t be necessary.

You can also get hydration from fresh fruits and veggies that are juicy, too! That’s why watermelon is sooooo refreshing on a hot summer day! And for those who worry about calories, water is better than juices or artificially flavored and sweetened drinks.

Feel better soon!

@hearkat Lots of watermelon it is! Thanks :)

@hearkat: I’ve had a doctor who’s also a chemist, and who had worked for two of the major manufacturers of name-brand ibuprofen in the US, tell me what I said. They’re both NSAIDs.

And Tink did say she had been doing physical activity in the heat outside, so one would guess she would have been sweating.

hearkat's avatar

@La_chica_gomela: your reply is a bit confusing… both major brands of ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin) are both NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) because they are both the same drug. Aspirin and Naproxen are also NSAIDs. Tylenol is acetaminophen… it is NOT an NSAID.

I missed the part where she said she’d been out in the sun… when it’s triple digits, you needn’t be doing physical activity to sweat excessively. But again, as long as you are eating regularly, electrolyte-based drinks aren’t really necessary.

@Tink1113: How are you feeling today, and how is your ankle?

Tink's avatar

@hearkat Its not as bad as yesterday, but tomorrow I have school so it going to be hard. It’s a little swelled up.

hearkat's avatar

@Tink1113: Try to keep it wrapped for compression and support, and elevate and ice it, too. Because they are anti-inflammatory, ibuprofen is probably a better choice for pain relief than Tylenol (unless there’s some other reason for you not to take them). Wrap it up during school tomorrow, too. Good Luck!

@La_chica_gomela: I’m on the desktop now, so here are the Wiki articles:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSAID
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paracetamol “In combination with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and opioid analgesics, paracetamol is used also in the management of more severe pain”

Tink's avatar

@hearkat I have it wrapped now, I just need to ice it. We have some ibuprofen, I took some a whe ago. Thanks!
