What are some of your favourite names?
I was just wondering, because I really enjoy writing and I need some character names. So If you know any interesting names that have meanings I’d love to hear them. Not to mention it’s just fun to learn other people’s opinions on things. Mostly I am just curious. Got anything?

I love using this name when meeting strangers on omegle….
My favorite names are Dean (no not him, I liked that name since a long time go.) and Isabella. (I liked it before Twilight came out.)
Shigeo – It is my husband’s grandfather’s name and my son’s middle name. I have always liked it. The meaning of Shigeo is “heavy man,” which certainly describes my husband, who played football at a weight of 265 and wrestled unlimited heavy weight.
Oddly enough, the name my husband was actually given means ‘Luxuriant beauty.’
The female name I like most is Marisol. Some folks say it refers to Mary of the Sun, others to Lonely Maria (St. Maria Soledad, a 19th century Spanish nun, or the grieving mother of Christ), and still others to sea and sun (mar y sol). In any case, it is a pretty name.
And then there is my daughter’s middle name, Toshiko, which means ‘Genius child’. In her case that is a very accurate description.
I also like
Mariah
Natalie
Marv
Chuck (For Chuck Schuldiner, not astrochuck…)
oh dae su (if you don not get this, I WILL KILL YOU)
Steve, Bruce, Adrian, Dave, Nicko, Janick, Eddie, Vic, Euronymous
@FujiokaHaruhi192: Perhaps you should think about the subtext of the characters’ names in context. James Joyce named his young protagonist Stephen Daedalus; and there’s Captain Ahab, Tom Sawyer, and all of Dicken’s folks.
Elizabeth/Elisabeth
James
I love names that begin with ‘Har’.
Harley
Harlow
Harvey
Harper
I also have this attraction to the names, Meshach and Lordes.
Ian
Michael
Demetrius
Edward
Siobhan (it’s pronounced She-vonne)
Daria
Mia
Cara
Lila
I always thought Caribbean would be a beautiful name for a girl (pronounced CARE-i-bee-an). Also, lots of women in my family are named Julia so I could see myself as naming a boy Julian which is a lovely name, I think. I also like somewhat old fashioned named like Victoria and Katharine (really, and just because it’s my name :P). My cousin is named Torrey and I used to think that was such a cool name but now I just think of it as my cousin’s name. I couldn’t name a kid Torrey because I can’t handle more than one in my life. :)
Emery and Avery are my favorite names currently, they would work for boys or girls. I like Lennon, Brixton and Ryden, also for either sex. I like James, but for a girl.
@elijah
I was gonna be named Avery, but then my parents decided on Dominic instead. It was between those too. :)
For male names, I like Rory, Kieran, Connor, Dimitri, Christian, Brody, Avery, Jonathan, Jack, etc.
For female names, I like Alexanne, Dakota, Katrina, Svetlana, Alicia, Marcia, Zoe, Chloe, Lily, Lilian, Grace, etc.
I know I’ve looked up the meanings behind many of these names before, but I don’t remember most of them. I know that my name means “of the Lord” and Rory means “the red king”, and Zoe means “life”.

Out of curiosity, @FujiokaHaruhi192, why are you interested in names?
My youngest son is named Kyle Ryan. sounds like a baseball player name, doesn’t it?
I also find Alotta Fagina very interesting.

I’ve become really fond of the name Clare recently, I just think it is very classic and beautiful.
The bear in The Hotel New Hampshire was called “State of Maine.” Original and funny and apt. (Irving did seem to have a thing for bears.)

Boys – Harley, William, Oliver

@Darwin, sorry!
It was part of a list of names I had on my computer…I didn’t recall either way (Jewish or not) so I took a chance. Guess I was wrong, :) !
@evergrimm: Ian is the Scottish version of John. My son is John and his Hebrew name is Ya’akov (Jacob). No John in the Old Testament.
“Wanda” has been my alias since teen years
Wow guys really great taste!! I really apreciate all of the answers, espeially all of the obscure ones. And evergrimm I am interested in names because I enjoy writing novels, it’s always interesting to hear other people’s opinions on that kind of thing, in my mind anyway. Thankyou all!! Very helpful.
